I first read about this method on these boards. A couple of tweaks here and there and we got a great rock drum sound. Zepplinesque, even.

One drummer who hits his drums kinda hard and his cymbals a little quieter (this is vital). Tuned drums help as well. This is a hard combo to find.

Fibes kit with 26" kick. No hole in the kick drum, just a felt strip across the mid left side of the front head.

Three Shure KSM 32s. (I cannot reccomend these mics enough, especially considering price). One placed three stick lenghths above the snare, one three sticks to the right of the snare. The last was placed about three feet from the high center of the kick drum.

Just to be safe, add the usual- D112 about an inch away from the kick drum, center-ish. 57s/58s (or whatever) on the snare and toms, per your personal taste. We used those mics on spots where the guitars got a little dense.

For the more metal-sounding stuff we also added a cheap radio shack lavalier mic dangled a couple inches above the beater. The mic compresses on its own and gets click from the kick and rattle from the snares. Completes the picture.

In was also informed by my various reading of zep books(my favorite band) That Bonham put tin foil in his bass drums (modeled after Kieth Moon) and he also had Barcus Berry pickups in the drums to add effects such as the flange heard in numerous Zeppelin songs (Kashmir,...) His late seventies set-up (taken from "A Celebration" by Dave Lewis are as follows
(a pre-tuned spare was always on hand for live gigs).
Speed King Foot Pedal
6 x 14 Supra Phonic snare drum with 42 strand snares.
16 x 16 top mounted side tom tom drum.
Two 16 x 18 deep floor tom tom drum
29-inch machine tympani drum
30-inch pedal tympani
Paiste 15-inch Sound edge hi-hats
Paiste 24-inch ride cymbal
Paiste 16-inch, 18-inch, 20-inch and 22-inch crash cymbals
36-inch paiste gong
Natal Congo drums
He usually used Remo Ambassador heads he later changed to Silver Dots and Black dots. He used Ludwig 2A sticks....
That's for if you reallly want the bonham sound

kewl - can you post your results - id like to listen to them. many thanks

I'm a guitarist/bassist who likes to play drums but I'm not a drummer. ;)

Anyway, I mic my acoustic kit with only one Ksm32 and get great drum tracks out of it. It's nice to see others who know how to unlock the secrets of this little gem..especially for percussion.

need a place to upload.

I have a great MP3 of a song we recorded with this sound but no place to upload it to. If you can give me a place to upload it I gladly will.

Here it is, the drums come after the first chorus.
