I first read about this method on these boards. A couple of tweaks here and there and we got a great rock drum sound. Zepplinesque, even.
One drummer who hits his drums kinda hard and his cymbals a little quieter (this is vital). Tuned drums help as well. This is a hard combo to find.
Fibes kit with 26" kick. No hole in the kick drum, just a felt strip across the mid left side of the front head.
Three Shure KSM 32s. (I cannot reccomend these mics enough, especially considering price). One placed three stick lenghths above the snare, one three sticks to the right of the snare. The last was placed about three feet from the high center of the kick drum.
Just to be safe, add the usual- D112 about an inch away from the kick drum, center-ish. 57s/58s (or whatever) on the snare and toms, per your personal taste. We used those mics on spots where the guitars got a little dense.
For the more metal-sounding stuff we also added a cheap radio shack lavalier mic dangled a couple inches above the beater. The mic compresses on its own and gets click from the kick and rattle from the snares. Completes the picture.
