I assembled my own heat album last night and jammed it on the way home from dropping off the kids at school this morning. Wow.

This is pretty good.

My only complaints with the mix would be that the vox in the chorus seem a bit quiet, and the hard panned kicks sound a little weird. It's an interesting effect, and most of the drums sounded good, but the kick just cut through as a little unpleasant.

Cool song. I like the thin snare sound. I *love* that guitar that comes in at :41 right at the beginning of the chorus. I agree the double drums sounded good here, but I'd probably get sick of it if everyone did it. I liked the lead guitar a lot.

The vocal in the first verse is quiet. It's also quiet in the choruses. Although I thought it was kind of cool in the choruses. I thought the lead vocals were too wet.

The low end seemed big enough to me. Did you fix that?

Awesome - I am totally going to do that too - Love Heat's stuff

Heat - you need to get some of these new tunes on LiveFrequency! I been doing some work on it

man this is excellent Pete...I liked it all, it sounds like one of yours from the off

great lyrics, the drums were odd but groovy, some great guitar chops...I never knew you played this well??

the whole mix seems more polished, Id agree with Rob, you've upped your game...I obviously respect and admire a few folks in here but you are one of the few artists Id happily have blaring in my car with the windows open, very Beck with a real 60's vibe

Yay! I hit on polished and groovy all in one track.

Hey, are you saying my prior guitar work sucked or something? :p ...it's really sloppy, but maybe that's part of the appeal?

Don't do the windows open thing. I've done it a few times...very awkward at crowded traffic lights.

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement keith.

Not too shabby, Pete! The sound of this song is definitley in a league of its own. I found myself grooving to it, which means that it worked for me. If it didn't, I'd be focusing on the drums instead of the song. Ya know, I wouldn't change a thing. Have a very unique feel to it, and that's pretty hard to get now-a-days, man. Great job (and good drumming performance, too!)

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you PI. I'm glad you liked it. Unique is good to hear 'cause more than anything, I'm trying to create something that is really my own if I can. I don't know why, but that is important to me, to that extent that any of this is important. I keeping dumping this stuff into alternative buckets as I don't know what the hell else to call it. I think I'm trying to sound at least a little modern, but suspect it comes across as "middle-aged guy struggling to sound relevant"...

Awesome dude - I love that fat bass synth sound you got in there (wtf is that anyway? is that a guitar? or a synth?) - that's pretty sick.

Backing vocals are awesome too.

Great tune man, nice job. I like the wide panned drums.

cool stuff

Hey man - I saw you got a new amp in that other thread. I'm looking forward to listening soon.

I'm not 100% sure on the fat bass thing. I don't have any synths, so it's either electric guitar or bass guitar, and the bass was pretty straightforward this time (no fuzz or anything). Come to think of it, this is my first tune in a long time with no acoustics - just electric guitar, electric bass and acoustic drums. Kind of nice to get away from the jangly zone for a while, you know?

I tried to get the backing vocals to sound like a choir or something. 10 tracks mixed down to 2 with a long cathedral verb on it. In the past I'd just do 2 tracks or something. Thank you for your thoughts as always.

That is awesome. See my warning to KC though. Keep the windows rolled up!

Hey VHS. Thanks for the feedback. You've done some multiple drum kit recordings, right? It's kinda hard to know where to put stuff. I bounced each down to stereo and tried to place them as if there were two drummers - one on either side fo the stage, but it seems that I spread them far enough that it sounds like you're right in between them. If standing further away from a stage, they'd blend together more. You seem to be hearing what Greg noted. Maybe I can play around with the panning, have them overlap a little more in the middle which would bring the kicks towards the center. Thanks again.

Always look forward to your critiques Trip. Thank you.

Yeah, the verses are messed up. I imprinted way too much delay and verb and regret it somewhat now. I don't think this tune is in a good vocal range for me and was probably trying to cover up an inadequate performance. Sometimes it comes out smooth and natural sounding, and other times just forced, hollow, or something else undesireable. You're right about the volume too. I now realize each verse is louder than the next. Not what I intended.

Glad you like the heavy riff part there. I don't have a lot of experience with those sorts of sounds, but felt that came out sufficiently nasty sounding.

Have at it! All free downloads on soundclick. I don't think my tracks sound much better in WAV format anyway :p.

I will check out LF again soon. I know they don't matter, but I got all freaked out by the ratings. Some songs showed 6 on one page and like 8.5 on another. I shouldn't care, but it's the only feedback I get outside of the clinic, so I guess I did care...a little.

Dig all those people on the front page "liking" their own tracks and leaving gushing feedback about their own tunes!

I have done some stuff with multiple drum tracks, but I've always got them doing different things. I also keep them panned pretty close to center. (But I have trouble getting enough separation, so maybe I'm not the best source of advice here! :D )

Cool tune bro. Pretty original, not really sure what you could do to make it any better. Sounds good.

No sorry required. We were cracking up. It's not like I didn't know the name of the song :-)

Phew. Spiritual crisis averted!

Yeah, if I were to do this again I'd probably work out different parts for the drums. The panning is tricky though. Some of your earlier multi-drum stuff was pretty chaotic, but it seemed to tighten up as time went on.

Thank you Phil. I'm thinking about adding some rapping in the middle somewhere. You'd be down with that, right?

Awesome song. I've listened to it a few times since you put it up.

I'm surprised how good the drums sound double tracked and panned like that. I probably wouldn't have known there were 2 full kits in there if you hadn't said anything about it.

My mix-ears are notoriously bad so I can't give you much useful info there, but it's really clean sounding with a chunky bottom end. I wish I could get my stuff to sound this good.

I like the soloing at the end, but I'm a big fan of all forms of rampant self-indulgence. :)

Your voice really reminds me of David Lowery.

Thanks guys. I didn't recognize that name, so I googled him and was like, "oh yeah...camper van somethingerother!". I didn't realize he was in Cracker too.

Having checked out a couple of clips of boths bands, I consider that a compliment, although I don't know that I hear it. I wouldn't mind sounding like that at all.

I think the last vocal comparison I got was Leonard Cohen! That was kind of a shock when I googled him...

lol @ rampant self-indulgence...hey, at least it wasn't 20 mins long ;) :p.

Google - CVB - "when I win the lottery", and see what you think. 'Sweethearts' is a great tune of theirs from the same album, I think you would like it.

Yeah heat, you should really check out CVBs stuff from the 80s if you haven't already. I think you'd like it.

Check out some of The Melvins later stuff. They use two bombastic drummers and it sounds pretty cool.

Holy shit! I just checked some of that out - Live at Hellfest or something like that. Bombastic is an understatement. That is just insane. I feel like such a whimp after hearing that. The dude with the fro kind of frightens me...

All i could find were live versions, but they were cool - "when I win the lottery" especially.

They have some great song titles - "joe stalin's cadillac", "i saw jerry's daughter", etc...
