In case you haven't head, there's a new Jeff Beck recording being released on August 5th, and he is about to tour the US with B.B. King (July 25-September 7)...

Oh, yeah, and he's going to be featured in the September issue of Guitar Player, I understand...

Jeff Beck has always been a great artist, truly inspiring and timeless.....
.....I just never *got* BB King - whats the hype, can anybody explain?

/Dara

I don't know what the hype is myself, but Santan's going down the same road. I saw him last night at the Hollywood bowl. Same stuff as when I saw him 20 years ago at Wembly in London. At least BB King can sing as well as play the same half dozen licks all night long. These guys are great for a small period of time and then they just keep on doing the same thing. Eventually it becomes nostalgic and interesting to a whole different bunch of people.

Now I get BB King because I am a blues fan. I also get Buddy Guy and SRV and Otis Rush and all of that kind of stuff. The ones I dont get are Santana, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Whats up with that?? These guys havent done anything of merit since the 70's. At least Clapton has kept evolving, but these guys?? Help me understand what the fuss is all about.

I'd say it's because you like the blues and those guys you mentioned aren't really playing blues anymore.
What do you think of Gary Moore?

Gary Moore is AWESOME!!!
Definately one of my favorites.

Santana explained

Santana is just getting paid now for being such a badass then.
Seriously! The grammy, all the crappy new songs, everything- the industry is coming around and giving him a pat on the back. I don't know why now, but abraxis was SLAMMIN, so I can say that he deserves it.

actually, for a while, I didn't get Hendrix, either. Then I heard a bootleg vinyl of a show he did in (i think) Hawaii (the vinyl was pink!)- after THAT, I understood that there's more than just "Foxy Lady".

mekka- "oye como va"- B

You are trying to be funny, right? Out of the three you mentioned, Clapton has probably evolved the least -- if anything, he's devolved. Beck, on the other hand, is always pushing it.

Jimmy Page??? evolved??? I dont hear it.
Santana?? evolved?? he plays the same licks over and over on every song.
Jeff Beck: the last thing I remember him doing was that "Crazy Legs" project which he was ripping it up, but he was copping Cliff Gallup so I dont see that as evolving.
I am not trying to be funny I just dont see it the same way you do.

I have to ask--exactly what are critters like page and beck supposed to evolve in to????????....I do understand the notion that we'd like to see them "stretch-out", push themselves, etc....and, I think page did that with the black-crowes, if no other reason than the fact that he was sober (or certainly seemed to be)...beck, on the other hand, continues to blow me away--"Live in Japan 1999"--have you heard his "day in the life"?
Jeff Beck "Who Else"
Jeff Beck "You Had It Coming"

True enough, that was a revisit-the-roots project if ever there was one. But since then -- as toyL noted -- the last two Beck recordings, Who Else and You Had It Coming, are both steps forward. Some of the more unusual things were the Bulgarian-influenced tune "Blast from the East" on Who Else, the swooping, Indianesque melody on Nitin Sawhney's "Nadia" and the incredible duet with the birds (no, not the band the Byrds, actual birds) on "Blackbird" from You Had It Coming...

You guys are making me hungry for some Jeff Beck(in a musical way of course). I haven't checked out what he has been doing those past few years. I gave up on him in the 80's.

Out of the three of them I respect Jeff Beck the most. He is the most technically proficient. Ya gotta love Beck.

Elvis, I figured you'd like Gary Moore. I agree, he's an incredible player with incredible tone.

They are all great guitar players.

They had the guts to play their own stuff and let it all hang out. It takes guts to push your own stuff so other people can hear it not knowing if it will be rejected.

So, I want to see some guts from you guys. Let me hear your stuff. Do you have the guts?

...Jeff Beck used to plow up some interesting and innovative soundscapes, I hope he breaks some new ground with this one...

Dude - have you ever seen Santana live? I first saw him in '83 at Queen Elizabeth's Stadium in Hong Kong. I was 13 and it changed my life. Since then, I saw him play at least once a year, sometimes more until 1993.

When he had Alfonso Johnson on bass - holy mutha!

Now I admit that when I was a kid, it was a lot of idolatry, and when I was 18 and realized I could play every lick I'd ever heard out of him, it became a deeper realization... I swear that dude can pull God out of the sky!

Yeah, the Santana revival is a bit lame, musically, but man, you gotta know it's the producers giving everyone what they expect, and taking a big payday. I don't blame Santana a bit.

Ever check out Abraxis? Or Moonflower? Some incredible stuff...

Artistic evolution is not always evident in terms of style or technique. Sometimes it is way more personal. After all do you give a rat's ass what anyone expects from you? Can they see all that you put into everything you create?

Playing the guitar is a reflection of your soul.

If your heart isn't in it. Then you are just copying what other people did.

Santana uses his every being and soul in his music. He is the only one I can say that can make the guitar sing with a couple of notes.

You say you know Santana's every lick. That is impossible because you are not Santana. Only Santana can produce his licks from deep inside hjis soul.

Dude, that is exactly my point. I'm not comparing myself to Carlos or saying that I possess what he does. We are totally unique individuals. Read my post again and see if you get where I'm coming from.

While I can technically reproduce all the stuff he plays, I am simply not him. Hes licks do not come from my soul. But I do know them all...
