Wondering if you hear opportunity and reason to add piano to undergird thin spots, and supplement dynamics....or is it done? More bite in the solo guitar? Too much FX in solo guitar?

Any other suggestions are welcome. The drums are meant to be that free-wheeling, ethterial jazzy filligree. Don't really know how close I got. I'm fooling myself into believing they sound OK. MIDI drums...crapp samples...although I did discover some nicer, higher-quality cymbals I didn't know about, hidden on an expansion card.

The acoustic is stereo mic'd, and untouched by processing. Bass is acoustic upright sample MIDI.

Solo is a Strat, neck pickup...tone off full...straight into the board, compressed a little. Added tape sim, delay, verb, chorus...blended to get the final sound.

Jeff, you continue to amaze me with your playing. Me giving you advice would be like... well, you know, c'mon. It sounds great. If you were to add piano, I think you would want it sparse and in the higher register. There's a lot going on in the mids and low mids.

IMO Jazz is the hardest style to play, but you make it sound easy. Love the song. If I can I'll give you a few points. Thanks for posting.

Wow....
first of all kudos on your guitar playing...simply immaculate, something George Benson would be proud of. Mix sounds fine to me, drums have the right laid-back vintage feel and I don't feel the need for a piano. But who am I to be giving you advice for a master performance like this....? :o
This is simply wonderful, Jeff.

Hey...

Cool fusion stuff, great guitar work :) Much appreciated

It's all been said--but I'll chime in. This is soooo sweet! Excellent playing captured with a great recording. My strat's on the bench (modding it yet again), but as soon as it's alive again, I've got some things to try. I've never recorded my strat the way you describe, but I love the sound.

Im getting a little distortion on the guitar, the drums need some work around the 50Hz mark and the bass is a little out there on its own..is the acoustic guitar definitely in tune?

hahahahaha only joking

excellent as per...Im just mixing my third attempt to stick up...but the wifes sleeping of an all night shift so I was thinking, yeah my mix just sounds crap through headphones, thats all...but for some reason yours doesn't...now I get to spend another afternoon throwing tunes in a pot, stirring them with a spoon and seeing what mess comes out

thanks to you

no seriously..thanks, to you..it sounds effortless and brilliant...you make me wanna like jazz :)

Sounds good, congratulations!
Nice performance , great eletric guitar tone!

if I could change something:
Acoustic guitar (too loud in the mix )
A bit less volume on cymbals

Ciro

Thanks for the ears and suggestions.

Got the new mix up:

Pretty sure it's done. Added a little rhodes in a few spots...toms, too: I forgot about that.

I think the acoustic is downer...rides and crashes tamed.

I'll wait and see before committing until some of you hombres agree..or suggest further tweaks. And then it's the vocal version, and maybe the full big band...like the first version. It's about old time orchestras from 1940's Ellington...the close harmony horns really sound nice on it...just don't have righteous brass samples yet.

Very glad you think it's good...put a lot of work into it. Trying to follow my own advice and play diligent, careful, disciplined, non-slop guitar.

Not much into jazz myself, but this is some stellar playing and a very nice recording. Thumbs up.

I'll just chime in on the kudos, but I wanted to mention a mix thing...starting around 1:20 and continuing for awhile, some of the guitar transients on the higher stuff really poke out in a not flattering way. Like brain darts on my monitors. It's not crazy "off the charts" kind of stuff, but it really stuck out to me because of the quality of the rest of the recording. The bend at 1:47ish actually NEEDS to be tamed. You might envelope those areas a bit...

...or not, lol.

Nice work man.

Man, sounds like you had a lot of fun putting this together. Lovin' the bass just fillin up the bottom like that!!

I hear some pops every so often. Don't know if it's in the recording, soundclick or my audio driver.

The only small nit I have is the constant use of the ride cymbal. It's there throughout the song. Maybe put in a highat for a while... :o :)

the transient pops are the pick hitting the top of the acoustic.....tried various edits....couldn't ditch them w/o hurting the track. Suggestions?

Yup...there are definately some enveloping opportunities: one of those things I noticed, but couldn't discern as truly worthy of a fix. Thanks for pointing them out...confirming my first impressions!

funny thing...I listened again a little while ago just for fun, and on headphones, those lead parts don't bother me in the least, so they're probably fine on 95% of what anybody would be listening on. Of course, we're going for that elusive 5%, right? ;)

Well...just listened again...and I'm hearing some other strangenesses.....gotta play every track and clean up some junk. And really tame the solo....during the orgasm, it buries the band.....just too way out front, I think. A little compression, maybe. Some envelope... Your first impression was correct , I think.

The ride thing..... My HF hearing is whack....maybe good to pull in down more. What I'd REALLY love is a rivet/ride, or whatever they're called...get that jazz-lounge sizzle: anybody got a single sound sample...or a real one? Send me a bang or two?

pm me your addy..not much but got a ride edge, mid & bell sizzles with brushes and 4 crash sizzles with brushes if any good??

jeffmaherguitar@juno.com

Thanks! Send whatever. I'm not a drummer, so I can't describe the sound I want exactly....but anything that sizzles is nifty. I can't believe that of all the thousands of samples I have, they never thought to include some rivets.
Much appreciated!
