damn scrubs, nice singing man! I am very impressed! That's from the Nady RSM-2 ribbon mic? So Ribbon mics are definetly pretty good for jazz huh? since they have a smoother and warmer tone?

What about Audio-Technica AT2020? or any of the mics listed in this post?

And how much is this rsm-2 mic? And how nice of a preamp will i need for it?

man i can't wait to get them so i can start practicing some jazz.
Is this all i need to make a decent recording? the mic and the preamp?

also, does anyone know a page with lots of sound samples of different mics?

Thanks, chief. The RSM-2 is about $200 and I use it with the Stuio Projects VTB-1 preamp, which runs about $100 (you really just plenty of clean gain, and this inexpensive pre has +72dB). There are certainly better options if you have the money to spend. AEA, Royer, Beyerdynamic, etc. all make nice ribbon mics. The Beyers are a little less expensive than the others.

The AT2020 is supposed to sound decent for a $100 mic, but it doesn't have much bass response (rolls off under 200Hz, if I recall correctly). The Shure you posted has just always struck me as more looks than substance, although I've never actually used one.

For sound samples of mics and preamps, check: The Listening Sessions

And finally, to make a decent recording you need:
Talent
A good sounding (acoustically treated) room
Decent front end equipment (Mics, pres, compression, instruments, etc.)
Decent recording medium (soundcard/converters, computer; or tape, DAT, etc.)
Some skill regarding mic placement, gain staging, effects processing, mixing, etc.
Good monitors to use while mixing

Among other things. ;)

hey

so the ribbon mics are definetly pretty suitable for jazz vocals?
And how do royers compared with the nady rms2 ribbon mic you have? And what's the price difference between them?

Also, did you get a chance to check out that m-audio set up link page i posted in the previous thread?
