Hello everyone, I am interested in recording my small jazz group and am think in the longterm. I would like to buy a stereo pair of microphones just for live recording and rough takes and as I buy more microphones down the road I can use those mics for kit overheads. Anyone have any personal recommendations for stereo pairs? my budget is around $300. Thanks

I record my piano trio with a pair of Oktava MC012's, usually with omni caps. Now I typically add a spot mic to my double bass, but I have done it with just setting up closer to the pair and no spot.

The Oktavas have that fuzzy, smeared quality you hear in jazz records (in a flattering way). I bought a pair of Beyer MC930's, and while they are high-end mics with detail for days, they are pretty crispy for a main pair for a jazz group.

I promise you will not be disappointed with a pair of the Oktavas. You can usually find a pair for around the $300 you mention - but they would probably only have cardioid caps. That can be ok, but I think the omnis sound better. They seem more like wide cardiods to me anyway. I only have to space them about 15 inches or so to get a nice spread.

These mics will do the job. Guaranteed. :)
