Hey everybody. Well, I'm back again. This time I'd like some feedback on a demo I recorded for my new band, Jacknife Nippit (I just play drums). Its in sort of a progressive rock vein - more modern like Shellac and Trans Am I think, but you can probably hear some King Crimson or Gong in there. We recently recorded these 4 songs as a demo and did a quick mix. There are really no effects at all besides a little compression on the kick, snare and bass gutar. I really think the songs need a remix, but I'd like to get all of your input before I sit down and do it. Thanks in advance!!

You can find it here .

Every time the stream was about finished it would fail on me. Sorry couldnt hear much. Anybody else get it work or is it just me?

So, does it work???

Anyone care to comment - come on guys, I know someone had to think it needs some work.

Nice intro, it sounded a bit bass heavy.
What happened the the kick. I can hardly hear it, and it also sounds soggy.

I like the guitar sound that comes in at 1:20. I love the direction the song went at that time.

Agreed. The kick and overall low end are my two biggest beefs with the mix. Need to get some of the mud out down there.

What song did you listen to anyway - blow up?

Thanks for the comments.

Okay, I listen to a lot of post-rock prog, like trans am, the champs, slint, tortoise, etc. I dig your stuff a lot.

Finger Cot
That synth sound is f*cking annoying. Please make it stop.

Blow Up
I think you use annoying synth sounds on all your songs. Why?

Song2
Again, the synth sounds are awful and annoying. Unnecessary.

Song5
At around 40 seconds, in comes the piercing whine of a terrible synth in my left ear.

Detect a theme?

I like the snare sound a lot. The cymbals are perfect.
The kick drum is a little absent.
The sound for everything else is just right.

I would fire your keyboard player unless he learns to play something that adds to the mix. It's incredibly distrtacting to layer high pitched modulating whines on everything.

LOL

Well, they aren't exactly synth sounds. He actually uses a bunch of stomp boxes and such in a feedback loop to create all the noises. Maybe I'll tell him to respond himself - he does frequent this board on ocassion. He wasn't there to mix it either, so I pretty much left everything in - don't know if he would have cut some of the high pitch stuff out. Thanks for the honest criticism though.

The drums were recorded using the method described by recorderman on recording.org (and tubedude here). Its just 2 603s as overheads, 57 on snare and beta 52 on kick (thats not loud enough) and my AT4033 as a room mic (which I barely used in the mixdown). I think its my favorite drum sound yet.

Keep it coming.

It's cool once in a while, and I don't mean to offend anybody or anything, but honestly, it makes me skip songs, and it's hard to listen to.

Which is too bad, because I'd listen to this stuff repeatedly...

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the noises r so annoying and i love that. but then again i listen to coil, nurse with wound, trans am, and laddio bollocko, soooooo.....
o yeah by the way this is the guy who makes the noises u heard. i mean to be annoying, i like it when people cringe to a sound i make.
thanx for all the + and - criticsm, keep it coming,
jal

Jal, just don't 'nurse your wound' at practice - otherwise we might have to fire you. Oh wait, you never come to practice so that won't be a problem. Then, again, there probably won't be much practice any time soon with the neighbors shutting us down.

hey gnarled maybe if u played some decent music ur neighbor wouldnt of came over and broke ur window. hehe
