J-station with compressors

I have a J-station and a Behringer autocom pro compressor. If I do this:

Guitar --> J-station --> Compressor --> Soundcard

I will end up with a D/A A/D conversion, which I'm guessing is not good.

Is there any way round this? Is there a way of putting a line level signal into the J-station? Meaning I could do this:

Guitar --> Preamp --> Compressor --> J-station --> Soundcard

Most distorted guitar sounds are compressed enough (by the nature of distortion) that further compression is unnecessary.

You may need compression more on clean sounds, but it's not a given that it has to be in the signal chain at all............ use only when necessary.........

Why not just use the compressor in the J-Station?

Yes, you can put in a line-level signal. I'm running:

Mic-->preamp-->J-Station ----S/PDIF---->Soundcard

(I'm also using it to record sax and it's working excellent!)

You could put anything else in the chain you want.

Yes you can use the chain you just mentioned.But I strongly agree with Bruce.

Also the J-station has a good compessor built in as well as a good line level analog out.If you have a digital in on your sound card,I would suggest using the digital out on the J-station and keep your signal in the digital realm completly.The j-station is 24bit 48k.

Cheers guys, just wanted to check I wouldn't screw anything up if I put in a line level into it.

Fx pedlas seem to go pretty well in front of it too, my big muff with the JCM800 with the gain right down sounds great.

I'm going to use if mainly for bass when my p-bass arrives so thats why I really want to use my compressor in front of it. The compressor on the J-station doesn't sound great IMO.

I find, like the others, that the J-Station compressor works very well...im sure that the Autocom, being a dedicated unit, could possibly pull off the compression a tad bit better, but not enough to put extra noise in your signal chain....and you definitely dont wanna add a preamp in the chain as the JS is a preamp....though some have put one in after the J-Statiion with some success for the purpose of "warming" it up.....
