Okay, guitar into J-> s/pdif out> into soundcard, no hiss

Guitar-J-Headphones.... no hiss

Guitar into amp .... no hiss

Guitar --> J --> analog outs to mixing board, no hiss

Guitar into J --> analog outs into amp ...major hiss.

Anyone know why?

by the way... when I have the J running into an amp, I am only using the effects etc (amp modelling off and cabinet imaging off)

Have you tried the no-amp/cab setting direct? Any noise? When you run through the amp, are you maxing your early signal, or making it up with the master volume? Does frontloading your level help with hiss reduction?

I'm finding my J-Station to be problematically noisy - probably having to do with the level coming off my keyboard. I haven't tried s/pdif yet - I should do that...

Yeah, when running into an amp I am running it on amp model A8 which is "direct, no modelling". On this setting the gain and eq knobs don't do anything, it is just the "level" knob that controls it. Also, i have global cabinet "off", so there is no cabinet imaging. I will try maxing out the level control and adjust the master volume accordingly to not overload the amp, but I think I tried this with no success.

Another factor may be that I am running the L and R outputs into separate amplifiers (it sounds phenomenal except for the hiss), which gives a really nice wide and deep sound: a SS Fender amp and an all-tube Garnet amp.

If I can't kill the hiss, I will next try putting a noise gate between the J and the amp... but that would mean I have to buy one (actually two if I want to keep using the two-amp method).

Half of my problem is I don't have any individual effects boxes, all my guitar effects are in the J. I will be buying some, but it is going to take time. Next on my "must have" list is a new mixer, a TC Electronics M300, a couple of sm57 mics, so guitar effects have to wait. In the meantime I am trying to get the J to work properly as an FX unit.

damn I am gonna be poor, I better get a superstar recording contract quick!

Okay, but what happens when you use A8 direct to the PC? Do you get hiss then? Sorry I wasn't clear.

Before I say anymore, I am going to wait until I am at home tonight and try it through every possible combination.... will post tomorrow with more info.

The J-Station's noise gate doesn't help?

one thing i found when using an amp was that i needing to crank the output volume on the J-Station as much as possible and use less of the amps gain/volume.......

Bongolation... no the noise gate isn't doing anything (I hear no noise/hiss on the output through any other path, it is only into my guitar amp)

Gidge: i will try that. It makes sense, as that really is what good gainstaging should dictate...crank everything until they almost clip from the front end on through. Why didn't I think of that?
