Yep, it's true. I'm gonna ask a question which could potentially make me a social outcast, but hey, why not? :D

Anyway, I've been looking at getting a pair of AT4040's, a nice mic, good for vocals, good for acoustics and micing amps to a certain extent, good for quite a few things. Anyway, the question is, even though they are LD, would they work well as overheads? Yep, crazy concept I know, we only like to use SD, but I'm actually curious, because I have a feeling they'd work well. Any thoughts or experiences? Cheers
 
Lots of people use LD on overhead. Where did you get the idea that that was controversial?
 
Not controversial, but more "unknown". I can't think of anyone here who'd recommend using LD over SD, especially an AT4040, but I'd be interested to know opinions

Many people use the 4040 as OH's, even AKG414's too even U87's.
Many drummers/ME's use 4040 now!!

Get um, I need some too!;)
 
I'd love to hear some clips or something, nothing found in the Clinic forum, or on the listening thingy website. I'll keep looking, and if you know any, be sure to post em :)
 
I use LD condensers for overheads at least as often, and probably more, than SD mics. There is no reason not to, and certainly no controversy.

C414's have been overhead industry standards for years, and I'd use them if I could afford the second one.-Richie
 
Hmmm, perhaps a little expensive :D Anyone else?
 
I use TLM 103's. They sound fine to me. Mics are important in getting a decent drum sound, but there are other variables too - I'd start with a good room & a decent player.

Sadly, I seem to get neither.
