Sorry for such a newbie question, but what exactly is mastering?

Yo Hopper of Grazza:

Mastering? Well, you take all of your tracks, send them to a studio or use your studio, set all the levels, set all the reverb, set all of the eq's, set everything, and mix it down to CD? Tape?

ADAT?

Whatever.

If you have a solid copy and it suits your ears, you can use it as a Master to create more CD's, etc.

If you were building a table...

Recording = cutting the wood to size.
Mixing = glueing the pieces all together, sanding and staining
Mastering = varnishing, putting on the hardware and a coat of wax.

The table probably looked pretty good after sanding and staining, but the varnish, hardware and wax really finished it off.

Sorry for the somewhat vague answer above, but are you aware that there are other sections to this site besides the forums - including glossaries and tutorials? I highly suggest reviewing them. This will give you a base level of knowledge and allow you to ask better questions in the forums.

As to the case in point, try here: http://www.homerecording.com/mastering.html
There are two links from that page to excellent articles on mastering.

You can also try here:

Once you done all that, you'll probably appreciate my "table analogy" a little better. Mastering does apply the varnish.

ooo thx!

If I would've found those tutorials and such I wouln't have asked, but thx for pointing them out!

BTW, nice analogy or metaphor (never really was good at that stuff in school  )

Yo Hopping in the GRAZZ:]

It was an analogy which is an extended metaphor. Nice to see that some folks know about that. I used to teach "that" stuff in College English Composition.

Recording is a series of steps and we climb them one at a time until we know which way the stairs will go as they fit with our equipment.

Dig the new analogy.
