It's true about stereo recording....

It's imperative to use two identical mics. I tried using a B3 and C1, and no matter what I did with eq, the continuity could not be obtained. Had to get another B3, and even though I'm using two different pres -- a Meek and the VTB -- they sound (of course) identical, and the stereo sound is just what I've been looking for for a long frickin' time. Yeah, tracking twice with your instrument is one way around it (especially acoustic guitar) -- and sometimes that will be a sound I want, but the full, stereo spectrum of a single instrument is glory to my ears. Now if I can get everyone to listen to my music with headphones....

And by the way, I found the Fig. 8 setting the sharpest of the three settings on the B3 for stereo recording. X/Y style.

So I take it you didn't try MS recording??

Pundit,

Which part of the country are you in?

Do you have a local retailer/stockist of SP mics, and if so what is their pricing like? I am trying to find who is stocking the SP range and who has the best pricing before I start looking to add to my C1.

Regards

Melbourne... well about fifty kms east of the city in the Dandenong Ranges! :)

Studio Projects mics have been thin on the ground here for a while. There has been severe stock shortages resulting in considerable back orders. I ordered two C3's back in December for a friend and cancelled the order two weeks back as there was no likelihood of any stock until well into March.

He couldn't wait any longer!

Frontend Audio in S.A. are the Australian distributors for SP's products. They should be able to advise you regarding local distributors in your area.

The catch with short supply is that many dealers may be reluctant to negotiate very much on prices.

While they list at $949, I paid $849 each for two C3's about three month's back. I normally get about 30% off retail from the muscic shop I regularly buy gear from, so I'd figured I might have got them for around $750 each.

The dealer I bought them from has the T3 tube mic priced at $1799. It's retail on Frontend Audio's website is listed at $1599. Would there be some price loading going on here?!!... Go figure?!!

I'm re-evaluating where my future purchases will be made!

BTW... A retailer who isn't prepared to knock at least 20% of the list price doesn't deserve your business. If you are a regular loyal customer and purchase at least $5000 dollars plus a year then 30% off list is more like it. Sure some products have more 'fat' in them than others but that should give you an idea.

Remember any business would rather make 15% on something that 40% on NOTHING!!

Of course if you live out in 'shit creek' miles from any competition then expect to pay more.

Cool, thanks for that info.

I’m in the Newcastle area and Front End Audio advised me ages ago that there are no dealers in our area. Guess I’ll do a ring around in Sydney next week…….if it comes to it, it’s only an hour and a bit down the freeway from me. The other (and almost attractive option) is to import.

I only know of Music Lab in Melbourne, Bondi Intermusic in Sydney and I think it’s Guitar World in Qld., that actively stock SP mics, so if you know of any others, I’d appreciate hearing back from you.

And yes, you are right about the 20% off RRP.
