After much thinking, researching, great advice... and then a big headache, I finally decided on a Toneport UX2 so that I could axe my Creative Live Drive Platinum and hopefully make some better quality music. Also I was finally able to get rid of Windows 98 and and put back XP
(Also ordered a new condenser mic, to arrive in 2 weeks)

The Toneport came with Ableton Live Lite (which I don't like, so I decided to leave it) and Gearbox.

First problem, which I'm hoping someone can help me with, is that through-out the use of the Toneport and Gearbox, I constantly get little clip-like sounds or a kind of static, and when I press record on my souftware, the first thing it does is make this sound... then every minute or so throu-out the recording, it doesn't seem to matter if I'm recording vocals or any of my instruments, it still does it. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Could I have not configured everything properly? Not enough ram? What?

Second problem: A big feature that I was looking forward to using through Gearbox was being able to monitor effects without recording them as I hate the dry sound when you're laying down vocals.
I'm hoping someone here uses Gearbox and can tell me how to use this. In the help section it tells me that I should "Select send 3-4 as input to my track in my recording program" I have no idea how to do this so at the moment my recording software records the effects in real-time.
I only use Magix Audio Studio 2005 Deluxe. I know it's not the best, but I've always gotten along with their audio software and it's fine for my purpose. Does anyone know how I configure it to do what I want?
In the recording prefs it's all set up to record from the Toneport and there doesn't seem to be any other options aprt from some modem sound thingy. If I wanted it to record direct with effects it would be fine, (apart from the clips) but I don't.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks.

To put this in other words, (which I don't understand immediately without reading the manual so I decided to bail on it).

Those frequent recurrent noises sound like the noises some software companies handicap their demo versions with. Have you registered the software yet?

As far as the input problem, you've found the part of the manual that deals with it and anything that I or anyone else here would tell you would probably only cause more confusion. Just play around with various settings and it will pop into place.

.

Well, thanks... I guess.
But actually my wording was closer to the truth, I don't like the way Ableton's layed out.

All software is registered, so any other ideas of what the interfering noises might be? I've tried changing levels, leads, recording software, but nothing seems to work.

And exactly what displeases you about the way it's layed (sic) out?

If you could find a way to set your prejudice aside and work with that software application you might find your other problems solved.

Lighten up there! What are you, in love with Ableton and my comment has hurt your feelings?
I'm allowed to not like certain software and should be able to do this without your insults and WRONG accusations.

As luck would have it I spoke to someone who wasn't so judgmental and who didn't have a pole stuck up his ass so I have sorted it out.
In future I'd advise you not to comment when you're only making assumptions.

sounds to me like you have your buffers set too low.I usuall avoid zero latency like the plague. Start at your lowest settings and gradually increase your buffer size closing and opening you app each time. Also disable or unplug any USB devices you don't use, also your on board souncards if you have any. I use GTR RIG2 so I bypass Gearbox comnpletely, in fact I don't even open it. I use Toneport soley as my main soundcard and recording interface.

AS far as Ableton, some folks love it, others don't. I Don't! I Decided to go with Sonar and haven't looked back since.

Toneport is an outstanding Audio Interface. Take some time to learn it. You'll be happy you did.
