Hi, i'm a newbie on the forum (and also on the recording) but i'd like to know yuour opinions on my production.

Mix 1,2 (semi pro studio, i was the guitar player)

this song has been recorded in a semi-pro studio with Yamaha 02R mix console, Focusrite F6 red voice processor and lexicon PCM-90 processor. 16 tracks ADAT 16 bit and some takes (guitar solos and choirs) on Logic Audio 4.2 (MAC). Mastered with the only use of Finalizer processor.

The Kick Drum has an High compression , awful IMO but the clean sound was ugly, really ugly....same big use of compression and EQ on the snare (ugly and cheap one).
The mix lacks also of groove but it's not my fault...i play guitar not bass or drum.
Guitars are dubbed (i think this is the correct term) like Nuno did in some records of the extreme, two track but same tunes to make them sound fatter and louder.

Mix 3

This was an home-made mix...really home made.
Recorded using my p3 500 512 mb ram sblive! and using a beta 58 on the voice. Bass and Drum are fakes (VSTi) guitar have been recorded using my Boss GFX-700 as a pre (no amp micing , too loud on my room.. :) ). Mastered using CoolEdit...

So please, tell me all the bad thing of these mix so i can improve my skills.

(I'm uploading the files whit my old 56k so be patient...)
Thank you
Paolo

Ok, my english is too bad... i hope you'll understand me

Hey Hey...Welcome, Newbie!

I will only listen to & comment on the Home Recording, since that is what this site is all about.

First thing I noticed was the over-abundance of Reverb across the board. That always makes for a muddy listening experience.

The next thing I noticed, is that although I can't understand a word you said, you have a nice voice. The words were well-pronounced. I'm sure Flavio at N-Track would have dug what you were saying, though. :D

The fade-out was rather abrupt, could have been brought down a little smoother.

The guitar playing/lead work was melodic & tasteful.

Good job...Just back off the reverb a little bit!

thank you

Thank you, i'll take out the reverb immediatly.
I'm planning to record this song whit the entire group next month so any other advice to improve my skills is well accepted.

I recorded the voice trough a old and cheap preamp then i added some compression to smooth it out and a de-esser and added some plate reverb. It was recorded in a small square room that added some enhancement to the natural voice (i think a sort of compression, eq).

Ciao
Paolo
