Now you know why I bought so much 406! Wish it were 407 though.

Wait is it just these tapes on sale? No 456 or 407??

Those are what I usually like to use. How does 406 compare?

No 456 or 407 because they were / are selling relatively well, thanks in part to word of mouth and marketing, much of it from groups such as this.

The 406 is really underrated. The 406 sounds IDENTICAL to 456 when used at lower levels (ie: around 0db or below) but when pushed, it saturates more easily and gives a more pleasing effect, at least to me, than the glassy sounding 456 (when pushed). Both are 1.5mil, have the exact same oxide but 406 has less of it. The 406 is a +3 tape while the 456 is a +6 tape.

Well the price is right, so I may as well get a few. How does it compare to 407?

The 406 and 407 differ only in their backing thickness. The 406 is 1.5 mil while the 407 is 1 mil.

Btw, forgot to mention that 406 has the same bias as 456 so you only need to recalibrate the levels.

damn, bad time to spend alot of money to get into this reel to reel malarkey then i guess. also became a registered member of the quantegy site a few days ago, processed order to the point when it told me the cost of postage (im in the UK), which was rather scary.

Currently they are only stocking Quantegy, although they are intending to stock other things later on.
