isolation on vocals

i have one 4x3 piece of isolation and i have it set up behind the mic i use for vocals ( if you were singing into my mic you would be looking at the isolation)
now my question is , is that a good spot to put the isolation or should i put it somewhere eles. thanks
 
Not trying to be an ass...just helping you with the terminology so someone won't rip you up later. Isolation is a state. Something is in isolation, or it has been isolated, etc. You acheive isolation by using various construction and/or sound absorption methods. I'm assuming you are talking about a piece of foam used for this purpose.

Now that said, I have no experience with this and will let someone else answer the question. Just wanted to help you out on the terms :D
 
I suppose how much you wanted to isolate the sound of the vocals from the room. If you're just trying to cut down on the the room's influence of the sound, then, depending on the room/mic, that should be ok. If you're looking to JUST hear the vocals- Maybe get a few more pieces of sound absorbing material and construct a make-shift "isolation booth" on three sides or all around the vocalist- that would help even more. Try different things until you get the sound you want.
A picture of the room, description of the type of vocals and what mic you're using would help us help you with a more specific answer.
 
inside that foam thing i made, is a CAD pop filter with a MXL 990 behind it. i know i need a better mic too

I might try putting the mic in the middle of your room w/ the pop filter and NO foam around it. They way you have it setup now, you're blocking half of the diaphragms pattern. Now granted, most of it is on the side, but that will affect your sound.

You have some brick where you're at, so you might actually enjoy the natural sound of the room w/ your vocals. If you haven't really tried it, give it a shot.

Personally, I don't like to make everything dead (isolated). You can hang a sheet around you from the rafters for a quick temporary way to cut down on room if it does bother you. I assume you're young and don't have a ton of money to put up.

I know the sheet idea is cheesy, but hey anything helps when you're young and broke....I've been there!!!!
