is vista THAT bad?

the legacy of Micro$haft continues. Anybody remember the initial windows95A?
didn't have 32bit support- (couldn't connect a drive bigger than a 800 meg?!),
constant registry corruption, crosslinked files, plug in pray ect...
soon came service packs, and a huge community of tips, tweaks and support
developed.
Xp came- buggy release, service packs, driver issues, yada yada ...
Imho Vista is nothing new- but with time the bugs will be worked out- the online community just needs to develop once again. :)

Interestingly a majority of the peopple I know with a mac are those black hair dye types. I dont think that says anything about mac users. I think it's more the case that dyed-black-backwards-haircut/fringe-with-highlights brigade are a bunch of rich kids who can just get mummy and daddy to buy them a new mac because their pc broke because they cried on it and macs are tear-proof having been tested on a wide range of emos...or something. I dunno. Maybe facebook and myspace just look better on a mac. What was I talking about again? Ah, yes....

Macs are pretty, but I guess I'm just put off of them because I feel like when I use one I have to strike a pose and put on a cheesy smile, like I'm ecstatic about the most mundane of things such as checking my emails. All this to a bright orange backdrop, and their MUST be a black person with me or it's discriminatory, and I must be wearing clothes that cost twice as much as my mac. I dunno. I just don't think I could keep up with the kind of cosmopolitan 'cutting edge of fashion' lifestyle that the mac conveys through it's advertising. I mean shit, some of my trousers are like 6 months old. I'm just not cool enough man. Not cool enough.

ahahahahah stop it your killing me.

Where there is the politically correct black dude, don't forget the Asain girl with the Camera, and the Swedish looking blonde off to the back left of the shot.

And the dance music.

Can I get a politically correct, interracial high five ?

Of all of Microsoft's releases, I'd say that Windows 2000 was probably the most bug-free and stable. I used it for years, even after XP came out. Been thinking about switching back to it lately but a few apps I use can only run on XP :(

Drumzzzz, I don't mean this in an argumentitive way.... but yeah, your right - Vista will get stable, there is no doubt, just look at the history.

But.... when it's all stable and ready to go...... why do we care?

Why would a home user care to have it?

Why would a business spend $5000 upgrading client systems to it?

Of what advantage is it over XP ?

They can get it stable, probably at a Service pack 2, 3 years from now......

...but what is the DAMN point ?

How is this different than just another Windows Millenium, kind of sort of half release.

THe majority of features we we're supposed to see in this version began getting smaller and smaller ie: the new Database oriented file structure did not even happen.

What is the draw to this thing ?

Your right Tim.

I've had Windows 2000 on around 60 machines, completely stable, networked across the country.

Well.... down in your country too, as there was an odd client from Texas and Vegas that would sign on when needed.

Very Stable.

I personally prefer XP Pro over everything though.

no argument taken- I agree, Micro$haft is one fat and arrogant company.
like I said, initially there is no point to vista- they basically release their crapware to have us beta test it.
However one of the benefits a couple of years from now is the DX10 Api- many more features like offloading much more of the graphics processing to the GPU,
features you just can't get from DX9 and XP- the drivers and hardware perks
haven't really been developed yet- DX10 games are few and far between.
The same happened when win9X to Xp sound drivers changed.

I'm not seeing anything revolutionary in this new Mac OS either.

In fact, it took me a while to figure out if I even had it or not.

Turns out, if your bottom application bar is "3d" then you've got Leopard. (Lep-tard).

Its all under the hood (True 64bit support, CoreAnimation, updated Finder and Spotlight, vastly improved iChat functionality, QuickView...). Leopard was more about providing a better toolbox for future app development. You'll see the difference once apps start making use of all the new underlying technologies in 2008...

AAPL $202.40/share:

DELL $25.13/share:

'Nuf said.

Apple's stock wouldn't have hit a record high yesterday if people weren't switching over from Windows and buying Macs in record numbers...

Not a very compelling argument... Ever heard of the iPod or the iPhone? That's what's driving up the stock price - not people switching to the Mac. Besides, Dell is not the only PC maker that's competing with Apple. They're all competing with each other, as well. Also, stock price is not the best way to compare. You can look at the *change* in price, but the actual price isn't a good measure b/c sometimes stocks do so well that they split, thus making it look like it's not performing well by your standard. Anyway, enough of the finance lesson...

Can we please discuss what configurations have worked well with Vista? I would love to hear anyone's experience with an audio interface and different apps running on Vista. I need to buy an audio interface and decide on a sequencer to use but downgrading to XP is not an option. I know many people have strong feelings about Windows and Macs, but can anyone provide any insight without getting into a Ford/Chevy-like pissing contest?

Thanks.

Get a FireWire interface.

While I don't have any recommendations other than just use XP, I'd like to say that your username is hilarious. Kudos!

Every moment you spend thinking about this is another that you aren't making music in. Seriously pick an o/s, find a good support forum for whatever you chose and stop trying to validate your choice by telling other people what you use.

NB: Aimed at no-one in particular but i just don't understand long winded discussions about this.

Good idea, but do some research first. Lots of issues with some units. TC Electronic (for one example) has had a hard time getting stable drivers out on their Konnect product. I recently bought a new system and before deciding on a getting Firewire mixer I was pretty set on the RME Fireface 800 which has a solid reputation. But as of now I'm very happy with the Yamaha N12 and the drivers are solid.
