this summer i will be buying a simple'ish soundcard (2 or 4 inputs) and i was wondering if someone has done something like this.(see picture) basically it will mean that i can have a couple of instruments and mics plugged into one box, then it will have a switch or something to select which input that goes out on one cable (doesnt neccesarily have to be xlr) to the soundcard /preamp. it wont need to amplify or do anything to the signal just direct the signal i want to the soundcard.

i know this can all be done with a mixer but i dont really need the features of a mixer i just need a way to get the signal i want to the soundcard without the tedious plugging and unplugging.

the complex blueprints a.k.a something i threw together in paint!

thannks for the help

A mixer is the only thing i know of....what you got against using a mixer anyway??? Anything that takes all of those inputs and sends them into one output is a mixer my friend. Looks like that is your only option...

well the size and the cost, theres no point spending money on surplus stuff i dont need

Well, the alternative to a mixer is seperate mic pre's. the cost of that would probably be tripple or even more than the cost of just buying a mixer...and those would have to be some cheap pre's to even do it that way.

get yourself a delta 44 (4 inputs) and a yamaha MG series mixer and be done with it...you can do that for around $225 or so...

Good answer thajeremy, listen to that advice

Yo Guitarboi! What you don't seem to be getting here is that mics and instruments cannot be plugged into a soundcard. If they could, you would use a simple device called a patch bay, which, although it does involve plugging and unplugging cables, simplifies and consolidates the whole process. The problem is, mics need a microphone preamplifier, preamp or pre for short, between the mic and the soundcard. Guitars and other similar instruments need a DI, or direct injection box, in between the instrument and the soundcard. Many mic pres now have built in DI inputs, known as an instrument or "high-z" (high impedence) jacks. A few mixers have them but most don't. A mixer has all the routing options you need, as well as basic preamps. For guitars, you will need a DI box at the very least, although a multi-fx processor like Behringer VAMP II, POD XT, or Vox Tonelab would be much more effective. Most folks will tell you just to put a good mic in front of a good amp. Whether you use a mic preamp or a mixer depends on how many things you need to plug in, and how many of them have to be plugged in at once.
Anyway, that's your issue. If you think you can plug a mic or a guitar directly into the soundcard, give it up.-Richie
