Well, I have never said there is something "wrong" with Orange.
I said if I were spending that much money I'd buy something else. For that kinda money I'd choose Mesa over Orange, I really like the versatiliy of the Mesa stuff. I got a lot more variety out of the Mesa than I was ever able to get out of the Orange amps I tested.
But then I'd save up more $$$$$$ and get a Budda or a THD. I also tend to watch the guitarists I like the most, to see what they use......none of them use Orange. But I've seen a few of the punk-ish grundge guys on late night Jimmy Kimmel using Orange amps.
Nothing wrong with it, you wont be disappointed at all. But for $2500 you can have a Budda that will blow it away..... For the same $1800 price you can have a hand made in California Mesa that will be at least its equal.....imo. Every time I test drive amps I always end up crawling back to the Mesa amps....but that's just me.

the problem is you might think the mesa will blow away the orange or the budda.. and that's completely fine.. but others will see it differently ..
for me with the exception of maybe the lonestar i would never touch mesa with a 10 foot pole.. I've never tried one that i like at all.. yet i can't get enough of the orange tone.. two very different types of amps that's all..
here's another question jonny c (it is you that's is inquiring about this)
what type of music do you mostly play? that influences what kinda tone you'll be looking for as well. Personally i'm an indie rock/a little bit of prog type stuff like the mars volta type guy and my orange is EXACTLY what i was looking for.. but if i played metal I don't know if this amp would be quite as perfect.

Well I hear you, Mesa stuff can be more versatile depending on what amp you get. I actually own Mesa stuff but still would love to have a RockerVerb 50 in my arsenal. Sitting in my studio at the moment is my Mesa DC3, a Mesa 5:50, and Randall RM100 and an Epi Valve jr however I'd still love to have that Orange punch in the line up.
As far as your question eeb, I'm not personally looking for a tone, I'm looking for another flavor in the studio for bands that come in with their spider II's wondering why their guitars sound like shit. I'd probably use a rockerverb for more hardrock stuff but also for emo/pop punk type bands. I know a lot of those types of bands love the AD30's for their midrangey british sound. I'm looking for some more in between a Marshall and the AD30 which I feel the RockerVerb fits nicely into. What bothered me a little in this thread was that some people were questioning the integrity and quality of these amps and imho they shouldn't. My buddy has never had a problem with his and he gigs with it, however my handbuilt in California Mesa has broken down on me before, so it can really happen to anything. The question here should be is it the sound you're looking for.

The problem that I see here is that everyone is comparing things that are radically different. The Budda's and the Mesa's and the marshalls etc... won't blw away on Orange amp at all. They all have different sounds. If the orange gives you the sound you need then for you it probably will blow away the others. The same goes witht he other amps. Mesa's sound very different than oranges and marshalls. Oranges sound a little more similar to a marshall, but still different. No mesa out there will do that "orange" thing, but then the Orange's won't do the rectified Mesa sounds either. People here are saying that a Mesa is more versatile. Generally speaking I find that to be pretty true, but it comes at a price, you will have to sacrifice that other sound if you want to go the mesa route. For some players that is a good sacrifice, for others it makes no sense. The bottom line is that whatever people want to think, the Oranges are holding their place in the market for a reason. They have a fairly unique tone, and its one that many people desire. Orange builds great amps, but they are really only great for people that want THAT sound. If you want something different, than an Orange may be a waste of money. All of this is before even considering what guitar is being used, what pickups, the players technique etc... Personally, I love all different sorts of amps, but I love them all in different scenarios. If I had to go buy one true workhorse amp, the one I think that does the best at all things is certainly not a Mesa, although the Road King 2 sure offers a lot of flexibility. I would be looking at a Bogner Extasy.
