Is this a stupid question?

I'm not a drummer... so maybe it's not a stupid question. But i was wondering.. Drums are LOUD ENOUGH in it of itself... in a home setting... but if you MIKE them....in a HOME SETTING... wouldn't that drive your neighbors crazy? or just bring down the roof? i just dont understand the concept of miking DRUM SETS ( i know, i know, its to record) but is there anyway to record the drums without being so loud? i mean think about it.. drums are loud enough and imagine those sound coming out of a speaker...its insane...

Now I'm confused, if your recording, the only sound other than live drums will be in your monitors, not coming thru an amp or PA. How do you expect to record without mics? something has to change sound waves into electrical impulses, that's what a microphone does. A microphone does not make a sound louder, it simply changes sound to electricity. What you do with that electricity determines the amplitude.

Im also confused 'cos if you were going to record there would be no extra noise than what there was when you normally play (practise) You either have you monitors turned down or not switched on at all when recording.

Then playing back you dont have to blast them!!

I can record drums without the additional sound from the amp because i can listen through the monitor which i can lower completely and still be able to record? If i can't hear whaat i'm recording, how will i be able to adjust the recording volume/EQ on the drums?

Canz!!!

Simple answer: if you're recording anything with a microphone, you should be monitoring through headphones, anyway. If you're using speakers, the mic will pick up whatever's coming out of them.
