Is this a crappy mix?

Ouch, you think this sounds like a live recording? ouch. You're gonna make me tear the whole damn mix back apart and start over. I hate live recordings.
Are you talking about right at the beginning where the drums sound weird for a couple hits? I think that happened during MP3 conversion, some weird slapback thing, cause its not on the originals. I guess I have to re-convert it and see if it fixes it.
I've since turned that lead up and doubled it, rolled all the high off the double, compressed the balls out of it and rolled in some low and mids. Thicker now, damnit. :)
Live? Live? Really? I hate live recordings, and if this sounds live to you, once of us needs to quit. :( Ouch.
Sluice, thanks for listening... still want a copy of that badass song you did. I can get it played here. I lowered the vocals a little too, sounds better now, more even. I think the clean guitar just has a lot of bite. I've turned them WAY down and it just keeps coming. I think this mix works now, I might post the new one. On to the others...
4 more sessions coming in the next month.
Peace!

Paul, I haven't forgotten. I've been experimenting heavily with my guitar sound and wondering why I never did before. I always assumed I was getting the most out of my amp, and I wasn't. I also ordered a RAT pedal last night so I'm interested in seeing what my Les Paul sounds like through it. A friend of mine used to play a classic gold top LP> RAT Pedal> Ampeg bass head. Unbelievable sound. It's time to stop fucking around.

Anyway, back to your thread! I also remember last night really digging the kick sound you got on this for whatever reason. What mic? AKG? I'm clueless about drum miking.

I like the crunchy guitars, clean ones are good to. Something is ringing all the way through the verses 'ring ring ring' more noticable in the first verse than second. It's either overtones from the hat or some other cymbal ringing sympathetically.

There are some timing problems between the kick and snare in parts (:33) mainly throughout the verses, change the beat to something you are more comfortable with maybe. Chorus drum feel is better. (except that little quick roll).

The chorus note choice for the lead and backup vocals is very.. strange. Sounds odd to me. It doesn't realy sound flat, it's like he is singing in the wrong key. Some more experimenting with note choice would straighten that out.

Interesting tune.

I'll agree he's BADLY off key on the chorus. It could be due to the fact that he seems like he's reaching for depth beyond his abilities. Aside from the snare, everything else sounds pretty good to me.

GREAT DRUMS BABY !!!!

MEAN GUITARS !!!

Not crazy where the lead vox sits though out the song.

NICE SOUND OVER ALL !!!

i'm with you, i like the drum sound. crash cymbals are a little soft, but i think eh did that becuase they werent good to begin with. i'm happy overall, and i know this isnt even the finished product.

It sounds better, now.
I like it just the way it is at this point... I even fixed up the cymbals some.
Maybe we should reshoot the chorus again, andy? I think if he could nail it you'd have a perfect demo on your hands. I think he will get better thoough, and next time we record I'm betting we'll see improvement all the way around. I think his verses are killer though, and I like the chorus's too, but they just seem a little out.
I have all but one song "done" now. Moving along, moving along.

I noticed no-one commented on the verb, so I assume its good and works. I use very short verbs very low in the mix just enough to add space to a couple things. I hate a washy reverb, all the local studios use too much and it sounds cheap and amatuerish when they do. I'm hoping mine does not.

Got a death metal band coming this week. Should be interesting.

Thanks for the words everyone.

i dont think he can do much better yet. give him time, maybe when we cut some more tracks in the next few months he'll be able to hit the notes better. he hasnt been singing a long time, but i think he sounds good, and i dont see that the chorus is bad at all. but what do i know? haha

alright, so how much better you think what we get (tomorrow or the next day) is going to sound? cuz there won't be any mp3 compression or whatever on it, so will it sound even better?

I'm listening to version 3 (I think)...

Did you mic both top/bottom of snare? I'm hearing a swrssh sound on the snare...

One of the kick drum hits are off time... is it possible to nudge 'em? (...around 0:33)

Interesting song. Will be interesting to hear how these guys tighten up over time. "Lying in my bed" is sung flat...ish (first chorus)

I like how the hardpanned guitars start to fade, then come back. Creative.

It's a bit repetetive, but pretty commercial... kinda "Creed-ish".

Too much "edge" on the vox in the chorus? Would work just as well with a bit less...

Snare needs more meat in the instrumental part before the outro.

Would be neater to fade the gtrs on the left/right at the same time w/fader moves, instead of the one on the left cutting out and then the other (preference) right at the end.

Pretty good production
