is there such a thing as a deesser on its own- to put in the rack?

The Drawmer MX50 is a rack mounted twin channel De-esser. New, they are about 600, or on eBay between 250-300.

I've run across the old Orbans from time to time. Supposed to be good and were used in both studios and broadcast situations. Should be able to pick one up fairly cheap if you can find one.

DBX made a rackmount de-esser called the 263. There are two versions, the older 263X and the newer 263A. They sell for around $50 or so on eBay. I bought a pair for $100, for example. DBX also made a more famous de-esser called the 902, but that requires their 900 series lunchbox.

There are a few Orban models, as has been mentioned. There's also a de-esser made by BSS I believe. That's not all of them, I'm sure there are more.

You can also set the "way back" machine and side chain an eq to your compressor for de-essing
