just a good kick and a good mic. try to keep in mind to use as little eq as possible. because if you eq it to death then it may not sound as good with the rest of the intruments. mess around with placement. try 2-3" off center of the back head inside the kick drum.
Sorry for intruding, but as far as I know, a graphic eq also uses "curves" to smooth cuts and boosts, only that you can't see them or change the "sharpness" of them as you can with a parametric eq that has settings for frequency, q, high/low-pass/shelves etc per eq band. So that a graphic eq is nothing but a stripped down paramtric eq(with a different interface)... Or have I misunderstood this?
