Is there a simpler solution for monitor volume control?

I need a volume control between my interface output and my monitors...

right now I have to power off my monitors everytime I overdub a vocal track, I just want a simple volume knob and maybe a mute button - the cheapest thing I have seen is this behringer thing

Behringer Minimon MON800 | Sweetwater.com

which I guess would work - $64 just seems like a lit for a simple volume control box.. maybe I should build one :p

anyone have any better ideas?

The bigknob thing is cool but $250 is just overkill for what I want... thats almost the cost of another guitar...

What interface are you using? I'm surprised it doesn't have a mute button by the volume knob.

Mine has two headphone plugs, and I just mute the monitor volume when overdubbing and listen through headphones.

Is there maybe some software mixer that runs with your interface where you can mute the mains and still have the headphones going (for example my focusrite came with a mixer that runs in the background and I can make different sub mixes and output options in it)? Don't you use reaper? If so I know you can make two different monitoring output schemes, one with monitors, one with headphones, and switch between the two. Another option, do you monitors have a volume control on the back maybe?

Yes, tell us what interface you are using. The Tascam US8000 is great - separate volume controls for monitors and headphones. :D

I don't have a separte mute or volume knob for my monitors, either. They are on a separate power strip and I turn them off when tracking. Pretty simple and easy.

It should be noted that when I'm tracking, I usually do about 80 takes, so it's not like I'm constantly turning the monitors on and off. They're off for quite a while. :o

Do you have an old analog mixer laying around? That's what I've always used. It might seem like overkill... but it'll work perfectly, and if you have one laying around... it's free! At present I'm using one stereo channel of a 32 channel mixer just so I have a physical fader I can turn my monitors up and down with... It's nothing fancy, it just happened to be around when I was plugging stuff together after the last move.

I don't have any old analogue mixers :( I'm using an alesis multimix 16 -

it has main mix outs but it's controlled by the main mix slider which also affects the input.

Maybe there is another way i can hook it up?

Dood, I have a passive volume control I will sell ya for $30. Got it with a set of monitors. Don't need it.

Friggen link not working. Designs Audio ATTY. $100 new.

This is the simplest solution I could find when I was looking for the same thing.

TC Electronic | Level Pilot

Works like a charm, and is nice and small, so it fits anywhere on your desktop or conosle....

Actually, It has been sitting here for a year. I'll go $20.

crap I just put a bid in on a Behringer MiniMON MON800 Monitor Mixer.

But I bid the lowest amount ($30) so maybe I will get outbid - ends in 5 hours :O

Just let me know. Yer cool, so I don't mind letting you have it cheap.

I'm sure shipping to Another Dimension will be under $20. I can send it out Monday mornin.

:D
