I'm in the process of picking out some mics for my home studio, and I was wondering if anyone here had some suggestions for me.
I'm mainly interested in recording female vocals (my wife is a great singer, but I can't sing to save my life) and acoustic guitar. My total mic budget is about $600. I haven't gotten a chance to try out any mics yet, but from reading reviews online I've been thinking about a Rode NT1A for the vocals and a pair of small-diaphragm condensers for the guitar (not sure which ones yet, but somewhere in the range of $350 or so for a pair).
But then I read some posts and reviews about the Rode NT2A, and a lot of people seem to think it’s worth the extra money. So if I go with the NT2A instead, that would leave me about $200. I could probably scrape together a few hundred more over the next few months and still get a pair of small-diaphragm condensers, but in the meantime I would be using the NT2A for guitar and vocals (so no stereo-micing, obviously).
So I’ve got a few questions…
Is the NT2A worth paying double the cost of the NT1A?
If I do spend the extra money, I’ll have only one mic until I can save some more cash. In the meantime, will one NT2A, do a decent job by itself for acoustic guitar?
What other mics would you consider with a total budget of $600 (maybe $750 or $800 tops), to record female vocals and acoustic guitar?
Thanks.
