is the rnc really all that???

I bought one, i like it, but its line is made for +4 equipment, all my stuff is -10. Everybody is telling me that i allready have the best $2-300 comp. And they have nothing to reconmend.

How many people really own a rnc????? and do you think its better than any other comp you own in that "under $400 price range".

Who makes these line change boxes for "-10 converted to +4 equipment"???
 
SOunds to me like its the best piece of gear you own, and you need to build around it instead of building around your other stuff. It does what it does better than any other compressor in the under-$1000 range, cleanly and nicely. Its not an old UA or Focusrite Red, but its not meant to be a colorful compressor, its meant to be clean and do what it does. And, it does. Fidelity-wise, its the best there is in the under $1000 range, must less the under $400 range.
There are hundreds of RNC that sit right next to $2000 compressors in many pro racks. That means a little something, dontcha think? And check the used market, if there are some, they are pretty much what they cost new.
Line conversion is a really bad idea, though. Once you go to +4, you need to stay there or you're gonna get uglies building up.

It works fine for -10. Really. It does.

It's specifically intended to work with either -10 or +4.
 
The RNC is designed for 0dBu operation - which is roughly midway between -10dBV and +4dBu gain structures.

This is so to facilitate interfacing with both -10 and +4 gear..........

No, fletcher told me on the phone yesterday it wants +4.
 
options....

1) send it back, and fletcher said they will check it out to see if something is wrong w/ it.
2) line convertion(tubedude said bad idea, though someone else told me yes....lol)
3)use the xlr outs on my mixer set on +4, using xlr to 1/4 cables into the rnc.(insted of the tape outs)
anybody run their rnc this way??????
4)bla bla, go home and masterbate to porn and send the rnc back.

i have an RNC and a drawmer dl241...

i can't really use either effectively yet.

I find the RNC useless for stopping peaks - it has a good sound though...

but I wish it were easier to use it in the mix phase, with my Q10.

that is the same as any digital setup though.
 
Line shifting isn't nearly as bad as what tudedude says (read- I respectfully disagree) I do it all the time with perfectly acceptable results. If you own all this -10 stuff, you're going to need one during the transition anyway, because if you're serious about recording, you *will* go to +4. I happen to use a KORG PXR4 Pandora for a travel amp, remote recorder, and all-around notepad, and it wants -10db. The cheapest, quietest transformer I know of is EBTECH LLS-2 (about $50). It accepts balanced or unbalanced 1/4" lines (no XLR), and converts 2 channels either way, from -10 to +4 or +4 to -10. It is damn near dead silent, and produces none of the nasssty noise that has been alledged by those who think transformers suck. IMHO, it's one of the little extras every studio should have kicking around to have in a pinch.-Richie

I think you misunderstood, or he's wrong.......

Well, the problem is that you amplify and reamplify noise that is generated throughtout the signal path doing that. ONce everything is at +4, no need to amplify the noise any further. But, once you got +4, you amplify some noise, and going abck to -10, you take that noise with you. Going to +10 again reaplifies that same noise and any new noise again. It does affect signal clarity. It just depends on who you are and what you are willing to accept. To me, I would like to hit +4 and stay that way, and I do. I think. :)
 
Why don't you just track dry and use a damn plugin, for cryin' out loud?

I know of a really nice comp that won't make you worry about +4, -10, getting on the phone w/ Fletcher, or any of that hoo-ha. Better yet, it has an "undo" function. It even has it's own cool initials: R-C-L. Check it out.
 
Several people I know, myself included, use the RNC in a -10 setup and it works fine for all of us.

In what way is it malfunctioning in your -10 setup that makes you think you need a "line changing box"? Maybe if you give some specifics as to how it's not working right, people could help you more.
 
Yeah, tell us exatcly what gear and inputs and outputs you're hooking the RNC up to, and how.

I have tried everything and i finally got this thing working the way i whant it w/ my gear. so ill be keeping the rnc (the last mix was killer) Thanks for all your inputs.....
