IS the MXL 2003 any good? I know the 2001 is not the best mic in the world but what about the 2003. let me know what you think,

I don't have one... but, I've read that it's a good mic... I've also read that it's a very bright sounding mic (lots of top end).

I have the nearly identical V93M. It is a good mic, very detailed and bright and a broad frequency response.

As such I would tend to recommend it for someone, like myself, who needs one mic to serve a lot of purposes. If you point to any one specific purpose (choral, solo vocal, strings, brass, winds, drums etc) you might be able to find a different discount mic that would be beat it. But if you wanted one reasonably priced mic that could do a fair job with them all it would be a good choice.

And BTW, until they run out of them the V93M is a cheaper way of getting the same mic.

2003 (brass recording)

I will be doing alot of brass recording, how good is the MXL 2003 on this application to the best of your knowledge, thanks,

I like the V93 on vocals, guitar and drums but I haven't used it on brass. Generally for brass engineers prefer dynamic and ribbon mics because they tend to be a little smoother sounding than condensors.
