Is technology paving the way to mediocrity?

Wrong forum or not, I'm glad to see this discussion. Mainly because it's something I've always wanted to bring up myself.

I've come to think of it as really two different art forms that sometimes cross paths. Both are valid if there's interest, and each has it's place.

Personally, I know I can program loops and midi sequences into my computer, but for me a big part of the satisfaction of creating the music is to see how well I can play it even if I have to practice the same part over and over. When I'm finished I can say "Yeah, I played all the parts myself (except the drums)".

On the other hand, doesn't the person creating beats invest his own time and use his own creativity to create something he enjoys?

So what about editors? Am I cheating if I use an editor to enhance my recorded performance? Maybe just notch out some unwanted noise, or cut and paste a chorus part etc.

I think the most important thing is to satisfy yourself. In the end, did it turn out like you wanted, did you get where you wanted to go? And if other people dig what you've done, BONUS!

Twist

I should have added to my Acid post, that I'm an avid user of Acid Pro for drum tracks. Acid can be the best drum machine ever made. I just thought it was funny that some guy wanted to use pre-made Acid Loops to release CD's. I can't remember which movie, but someone recently stated that they used Acid Pro to do the soundtrack to a major movie. And not just beat stuff... orchestral stuff.

Actually, I can achieve mediocrity with just about anything! Such is my gift!
