Hi. I just inherited a real nice pre-amp from a friend. I tried it, and it seems to sound really cool with my voice. However, I notice that when I crank up the dial all the way up on it (to a point that I would never actually use) there is some hum. Is this normal? It even happens even if no cables are hooked into it. Is that what they mean by noise floor, or ceiling???

Thank you so much!

yes...it's normal

Every single piece of hardware has its own noise, produced by circuitry. The "noise floor" is the noise generated by all the gear you have hooked up. However, you must check that is acceptable, at least for you, but if you say it's only noticeable when you crank it up real loud, it's absolutely normal.

Peace...

oh-- hi again! It's refurbished NEVE 1272 components. It's called a Vintech-- supposedly quite good! I think it sounds yummy!

Don't use it !! Humm is non negotiable. It will kill your recordings....before attempting to use this thing thing twice.

In order to be really sure you're not going to destroy your own recordings please send this preamp to me asap. I have a special container were I only put in this that start with neve. I really do...I am not going to use it myself...I really am not....oh hell just send it to me.

Neves are nasty things. You should send it to me for proper and safe disposal.

These guys are all evil and are trying to trick you out of a nice preamp.I,on the other hand,am a perfect gentleman.I will not lie to you, that is a sweet preamp and would be perfect for the recording project that I have in mind involving widows, orphans and homeless pets(including puppies and kittens with big sad eyes).Just thinking of all those poor souls brings tears to my eyes,oh the good I could do!! :D
