argh! like lonelyness needing of shredders..

Ahhh. Tasteful shred!

It's like watching Barry Sanders run.
Like watching Michael Jordan play basketball.
Like seeing Arnold Schwartzenegger in hiis prime.
Like going on a speedy rollercoaster ride.
Like sex with a porn star.

Back to the original purpose of this thread, I do think shred will make a comeback. I know I'm young, and maybe this is just a Winnipeg thing, but everyone that I know shreds. Almost all of my friends play guitar, and the ones that can't shred always get crap for it :p It doesnt mean that you have to shred if you can, but it's good to be able to shred decently because it means you have good technique for playing at normal speeds.
Another good sign is that I don't know anyone who actually plays an instrument and likes much of todays music.

I think tasteful shred will come back. Many of my guitar students(young) really like it. I had them playing Van Halen, Older Metallica, Ozzy etc... They really started to dislike a lot of the newer stuff...

In fact, one of them bought the newest Metallica CD(when it first came out) and was so excited he called me... Later in the week he came ot his lesson and I asked if he had it and wanted to learn a tune... Looking down at the ground he said, "No, I threw it away"... "It sucked too bad"... Surprised, I said "Really?" He said, "Yup, NOT a single respectable guiar solo on the thing"

Shred

shred never really went away. the awesome players always stuck around, but they are usually just that... awesome players. being a great songwriter is another thing alltogether.

You got that right...

Personally, I'd have anytime the bridge solo from "Comfortably numb" over anything from Satch, Vai or any other "guitar-speed god".

You can keep that snatch boogie nonsense....

well...might as well respond to a several year old thread :p

amusing shred video here.....

Beyond the fact that it sounded like crap, I was surprised by the inefficiency of his technique--yes! During the fast picked parts, he rested several fingers of his right hand on the guitar. A good way to get tendonitis. Also, the showy over-the-top left hand fingering was mostly unnecessary; probably that was done simply because the otherwise impeccable left-hand fingering is actually pretty boring to watch.

Finally, I note that he strictly used 'blues' side-to-side vibrato, which is less efficient and expressive than classical up-and-down vibrato, which has the advantage of shifting pitch flat and sharp, rather than just sharp, and can be used on chords . . .

Really, he should take a classical guitar lesson :p

Most of this sort of thing was done, and done better, in the 19th century on violin. Still, I'd rather listen to Bach's Chaconne from the Partita in Dm for solo violin. Play that well on guitar and I'll be impressed.

In my kingdom, shred would only be played by the ones with the biggest hair.

Shred is kind of fun to watch for a minute, but then it just gets really, really annoying real quick.

i think thats why slash is so i highly rated guitarist cos he some of the best phrasing and know when to play and when to shut up and let the band play....but i do love the shred!

There's a reason 80's shreading went away, it gets boring (except to other shreaders).

Kinda like typing, it might be interesting to watch the worlds fastest typist for a moment, but if there isn't a beautiful poem on the paper when it's all done, what's the point!

P.A.

I will never forget those early years, just before the hairspray, spandex, wankeroo and stupidity, when bands like Metallica, Maiden and Anthrax were just playing the shit out of their instruments in street clothes. I find nothing over the top in those early albums because the shred was well written and mostly embedded in the rhythm playing.

That's the kind of stuff I'd like to see make a comeback.. Shred in just the right places with a singer that neither sings too high nor too vomitrocious. And it wouldn't hurt if they could give me back my Headbanger's Ball.

But alas, trends don't usually go my way.. or if they do, I can only enjoy it for a few months until everyone thinks it's cool and then things get too excessive.. leaving nothing but industry sound-alikes of the most limp-wristed lameness..

i think that is what's coming back. not so much shred, as being tastefully technical......if that's possible........wait of course it is.......hence Jazz. i don't think full on shred/wank bands will be back for a while, but i think musicians are definitely wanting to become more technically proficient.

Many people hope shred will not come back because there will be lack of substance in a song? I don't get it? Where the heck are all these "supposedly" great songs? Are they on the radio? Where?

I can think of only 3 bands (Maroon 5, Los Lonely boys, and Velvet Revolver)... That have ANYTHING even worth listening to...(song wise)

BTW: the dude in Los Lonely Boys shreds as does Slash hhmmm?

Shred

Shred is back from the dead ?!

Neoclassical styles , Slavadore Vecchio , Vinnie Moore , Malmsteen , PAUL GILBERT?! Cant wait all my favorites and on guitar my favorite style to play .

I prefer the focus to be on a good song. If that includes some shred, so be it.
