shane is cool and has some great lyrics
zacanger said:I'm not saying he's on a par with the Edge, seeing as he's not a guitarist. I'm just saying, anyone can play simple parts and use a ton of effects to make them sound good.

clinton said:it's all about style..... for example If I hear members saying that a certain Jazz guitarist sucks, and then check out that members homepage and listen to his mp3's only to hear that he plays ac/dc type rock or country music then that members opinion is basically null and void as to whether the jazz guitarist sucks or not.
Codemate..I listened to your mp3's and your music sounds very showbiz/theatre with very minimal guitar playing in there...I would say that you are a very good arranger but I dont hear anything in your music that sounds like guitar rock at all (which is what U2 plays).
Malmsteen is an incredibly fast guitarist but he plays with no feeling and has the nastiest guitar tone and dress sense ever.... does this mean he is a crap guitarist...well if you are a stone cold blues player you would probably say yes....if u were a shredder u would say no....
As for the whole effects are bad thing... remember that hendrix was a pioneer in using effects. He would sit for two weeks to try to get a reversed tape delay just right... and also remember that not every guitarist thought that Hendrix was good. Howlin Wolf as well as other traditional blues greats HATED what Hendrix was doing to the blues...
Its all about style. Guitaring and music is bigger that our preferences and when we learn to find something good in any form of music then we are finally learning to listen to music with a MUSICIANS EAR.

Not going to get into one of the many bizarre tangents that spin off these boards but it is true that you can make up anything about yourself on the internet and who's to now if it's true or not... to be honest I couldn't be bothered creating a different personality online. Not going to bother getting into what I do in detail.. it doesnt really belong in a thread about U2 and The Edge anyway! Only reason I posted that was because i read the previous post wrong and thought I was being accused on being an activist (Bono is the activist)... anyway, deleted it straight away but you obviously spotted it quickly!

Thin Lizzy were great but have you forgotten Horslips (a barstardisation of Horsemen of the Apocalypse)? If not for Lizzy & the 'Lips, (the latter started the serious DIY revolution in '71 - well before punk) were would The Precipice, Onob and Co. be?
zacanger said:Ah, sorry, it didn't register. Any idiot with a guitar and a ton of effects can sit down, play random shit, and be called a writer of masterpieces.
stash98 said:Everyone would do it if that was the case. Hey, I thought the same way way when I was younger too. There is a lot more to it then the way you are oversimplifying it.

Superhuman said:Now that you mention punk... how about Stiff Little Fingers? Another solid Irish band. Horslips were a great band too, very influential, especially on the likes of Thin Lizzy. Even Metallica were influenced by Thin Lizzy (mostly in the Cliff days). They even played Whisky in The Jar at the last gig in Dublin (cover version appeared on the B side of one the Black album singles), the crowd basically demanded it. It was great, they played an impromptu version, it seemed like they had no idea it was going to come up but it went down as one of the best songs of the night.
