I am really just looking for a DI box but if I could find one that would double up as a mic pre it would save me some trouble of finding a seperate one or a dynamic mic to record my guitar I am starting to get this i just need to learn some chord progression I think and I may have it down to an extent after that i plan to buy a bass and play along with that via di and maybe a electric guitar and a wah pedal but id only use it for a wah effect which is good and bad kuz i would use it a lot

There are mic pre's that also except a trs connection, if thats what your talking about. Probably not as good as a dedicated DI but it works.

thats what i was lookin for

There are many pres that do accept a TRS and are excellent DIs as well.

My ADesigns MP2 is such a pre.

It's a better idea to run a DI box into a preamp than it is to go directly into a preamp with a guitar/bass etc.

huh???????????

why is that? besides that right now I would be looking for a combination kind of deal just because my space is limited and i already have a good amount of stuff in my rig

Isn't the brick by groove tubes a mic pre and di both? From what I see most people say about it, it does a pretty decent job at both.

I think he meant a DI would be better than going into a pre with no DI. The DI inputs on some pres are quite good, actually. The only real drawback to getting a combo unit is unless it is two channels, you can't use a mic input and DI at the same time.

If you get a DI box, you usually still have to run it through a mic pre. If you get a mic pre with an instrument input on board, you can use that and pass on the DI box and it won't really make any difference. Unless you're talking about some high end DI box, the built in instrument input that you find on alot of mic pres will be just as good.

thats ok I don't record vocals so I would be set I am a hiphop/r&b instrumentalist Id do the vocals usually last I dont know how they do it in other genres but in mine we record all of the instruments and then do the vocals

you just have to remember that DI box = impedance matching

even if a preamp has a TRS input, if it doesn't have a high-z switch, you're going to have a hell of a time getting a good sound out of your instruments

Some pres are setup for DI..My LA-610 has an adjustable Z input for 47KOHMS or 2.2MOHMS for passive or active pickups. And it makes a GREAT bass DI
