Is it more difficult than it's worth?

Is it more difficult than it;s worth to create drums with a DAW? I don;t have a MIDI keyboard, so will it be even more difficult? I'm trying to record my own album.

I think it's a better deal to score a set of drums and learn how to play them. When your done you have drums and a new talent:D If you live in an apartment not conducive to drums you can always learn on pads until you're ready to record and then go some where else to do the tracking.

Did I mention real drumming sounds better?

get a program like EZ drummer. The sounds will be better than what 90% of the people here get using real drums, not to mention using the MIDI phrases you can compile together and have a drum track done in a matter of minutes for your typical 3-4 minute song. In other words, you don't need to "input" single drum hits if you don't want to. With some expertise using some of these drum programs, you can create some extremely convincing drum tracks that I might dare say could fool more people than you think. Or...if you're not into "foolin"... you can just create some very nice sounding tracks, never the less.

I'm sure there are people on here that would help you out and would maybe play drums over your song for ya

In my opinion, even EZ drummer is a bit of a pain in the ass. It's cool if you don't have a good drummer available, so you can figure out the exact beat that you want. And EZ drummer has a surprisingly realistic sound to it, if you play with it a bit. Maybe I'm not good at sequencing, but I find it to be a lot of work, though.

I farted around with a sequencer and quantizing for about 6 months before I said to hell with it, got a kit and learned to play.

Doin rolls and crashes are a lot more fun to do for real instead of pushin a button. :D

That depends on the genre of music. Real drumming does no one any good if they're doing techno, drum 'n' bass, IDM and other electronic music. Drum machine and sampling is where it's at for this kind of stuff.

So to the OP... What genre of music are we talking about here?

We're talking about rock music. I'm getting tired of fumbling around with my Sonar Home Studio 7 DAW. I'm still in the process of learning how to use it and it's leaving me uninspired. All I really need to figure out is how to use the drum sequencer.

Hell, I might even end up just buying a real kit.

if you cant make loud noises where you live (aka an apartment) or are pressed for cash and cant buy drum mics then no its not, however i would recommend programming them on the piano roll instead of playing them on a midi controller.

if you have the time to learn how to mic real drums, the money to buy mics and a drum kit, and the drumming prowess to play all the beats you want then by all means buy a real drum and use that because it will sound better

Here is a little dittie using EZdrummer... give it about 1 minute until the drums come in.... then there's a drum solo at about 3:20. Nothing too musically fancy (kind of a evening musical idea), but gives you an idea of the sound of EZD. This took all of about 5 minutes to program the drums. Then at about 4:00 are some very soft played toms.

btw, I am not going to vouch necessarily for the realism of the drum parts, but I rarely hear drums recorded in modest home setups that sound as good... at least imo.

i like groove agent. i have gotten pretty good results from that.

has anyone ever tried that drums from hell thing? is it any good?

I agree with whoever said....yeah ezdrummer can suck like a vacuum cleaner. The biggest frustrations for me are doing drums with ezdrummer and doing bass with midi.

I don't know shit about drumming and fills and hihats and all that
