Hell, Shakespear wrote and entire catalogue of sonnets, plays, epic poems that all rhymed. His work transcended the standard A-B-A-B or A-A-B-B stuff. Try a Petrarchan sonnet form likeA-B-B-A-A-B-B-A followed by C-D-E-C-D-E or C-D-C-C-D-C.

Breaking up the flow of the rhyme scheme can breathe new life into your writing by opening a new dimension for your rhymes to settle into. I also allows you to comlplete a thought with out having to be tied to one particular rhyming sound.

The genius is in the ability to not sound contrived and yet still carry out a brilliant narrative.

Well said, that just about sums it up.
I'm not sure how much folk can be taught that, or whether it's just down to talent in the end. I mean you can teach someone to paint, technicaly, but never turn them into a renowned artist, and i think the same goes for songwriting there has to be some inate talent there to develop.
 
rhyme all the time and once in awhile throw in a line that doesn't and it sticks out like a sore thumb.
