Gidge

Lapdance Test Dummy
As promised, 1000th post (I think) and first mp3 post....recorded and mixed in about 1 hour...no track editing...all tracks are first take.....Crappy $300 Yamaha guitar that hasnt been setup in 6 years....$130 Fender bass....both thru J-Station....Shure sm57 thry M-Audio DMP2 preamp....recorded in N-track with Delta Audiophile and encoded with N-Tracks crappy encoder.....only eq and reverb on some of the tracks.....and then severe limiting on the mix....

Not really looking for mixing/recording comments because lets face it, that sucks...I kinda meant it that way....Id like to hear your comments on the song though.....Maybe Bon Jovi will record it and Mutt Lange can produce it and save it from the torture I put it thru....

Here it is, out of key crackin vocals and all....

Way to go, Gidge. :D

Listened to it lo-fi, my modem go any faster for some reason and I don't see a d/l option.

Interesting song, very rock anthemish if you know what I mean. Reminds me a bit of REO mixed with springsteen. Wish I could hear it better, upload it somewhere where it can be d/l'd.

Good stuff.

I listened to the hi-fi version ... although a download may be better because I heard quite a few artifacts that I don't think you intended.
my first thought was "man is that loud!" ... there just doesn't seem to be a lot of room for dynamics in the mix ... almost like it was RMS maximized or something.
The guitar solo at the beginning could come down a little bit ... and the heavy guitar could be louder throughout.
I think the vocals are far too loud ... and I swear I hear some distortion on them ... either from digital overload or the effect you have them running through (sounds like a chorus or something? ... could be weird mp3 artifacts though). Also, seems like the cymbals and drums overall are panned a little to wide ... makes them sound that much more fake ... also seems like the cymbals are louder than the drums ... I don't know if those are on separate tracks or not, but I'd bring the snare up and the cymbals down if you can.
Again, it's hard to know if this is what it should sound like or if it's the streaming of it.

Emeric, If you use Internet Explorer (not sure about Netscape), go the the link I gave in the first post, right click it and copy it to the URL window...from there you should get a "save" option....thanks for listening...hopefully Ill get a chance to record it for real...I wrote this one probably about a year ago, just the lyrics and some chords, and I just got a chance to work it up a little.....

BigK, thanks for listening also...the loudness is my "severe limiting"....theres some distortion here and there, as everything was first take...the drums arent on separate tracks for this mix, but I usually do it for "real" mixes....this mix was the result of a conversation I had with one of the newbies, and to make a long story short, I was trying to make a point that the song is the most important thing, and recording quality isnt everything.....I broke about every rule of recording/mixing but hopefully someone will sort thru that and see a decent song...

doh!
I get it now!! :o
I must have missed the part where you said "not really looking for comments on the mix, etc ... that sucks!" . I had a feeling that this wasn't a good showcase of what you can do! heheh
I was listening as an engineer and not a listener. So, yeah ... a decent song does come through.

Hey Gidge, Liked it. I've always liked the slower rock ballad type stuff anyway. Crunch with feeling. I can't comment on the mix because you've heard some of my stuff... ...'Nuff said. But the song, again, I liked it, and would like to hear some more stuff. Tom BTW, I've took your advise on the mix of one of my tunes and it should be up and running soon, as I'm almost done tweeking it.

Tom, thanks for listening...cant wait to hear the new mix of your song....Ill probably go ahead and finish this song, but Ill be putting something else up soon....I promise everyone that Ill actually do at least 2 or 3 takes per track and actually mix it.....I might even get a real singer to sing it...Glad you liked the song....

Shana,

Thanks for listening....hey, Id love to have you sing it....I think your voice would sound great on it....i might have to tame the guitar down some....if you are serious, let me know....

Well, since you don't want any MIXING advice in the Mp3 MIXING clinic, I guess I'll just say that "You ain't leavin' much behind" is a great hook.

That encoder sounds like shit, btw. :D

Love to hear Shana play with it, too, although it's more of a guy's song (women, unless they're crack whores, never feel as if they're "nothing." dammit.)

Crack whore....lets leave my wife outta this...(just kiddin)

It's about time Gidge!

Since you don't want any mixing comments...I guess I won't comment on the mix. :)

It's got potential. I think the lyrics maybe could use some work...fewer cliches perhaps... I always feel guilty saying things like this because I couldn't write a decent song to save my life. The hook lyric is good though, I like it....verses are always a bitch.

As far as the music, it's very time-period, in that it sounds about 15 years old. Hey, you said you wanted comments on the song, so they're going to be subjective :) Anyways, that's how I hear it. You mentioned Bon Jovi and I think it fits that genre...somewhere between there and modern country.

Anyways, I hope you work on it and continue posting.

Good work!

Slack ,

Thanks for listening and the comments....I promise I will post something soon that will require mxing comments....Hopefully the version where I actually try to mix it will will outdo this one, but I cant promise anything....

Dont feel bad commenting on the lyrics....I didnt post it for someone to tell me its the greatest song they ever heard...I want honesty and I appreciate yours...Sorry about the lyrics containing some of the words off you black list of words you never want to hear in a song....for those of you not up to speed .......

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13493&highlight=heart

As far as time-period, dont feel bad...Emeric put me back to REO Speedwagon...but unfortunately thats what I listen to alot and am influenced by most...ametth had me listening to Radiohead and Sunny Day Real Estate while I listened to some Foo Fighters based on some comments made about them on the BBS...maybe some of that will rub off on me....

Somewhere between BonJovi and modern country....I can live with that....

I appreciate you listening and your comments.....

I didn't meant to imply that sounding "old" was bad... it's just that sometimes a person might not hear his music the way others do. So I just felt I'd be honest and tell you what I heard. Simple as that!

It's always great when a regular posts his first tune. Questions: why did ya wait so long and when can we expect more?

Slackmaster 2000

Slack,

its cool...Im comfortable with the style of music I play...its a little dated but its what I do....I expect people to pick up on that....I didnt take it as a bad thing....

Why did I wait so long?....Well lately Ive considered myself more of a songwriter than a musician....I dont play as well as I used to and my voice sucks.....When I do record, even though I have learned so much here, I tend to just rush thru a song just to get it down and dont really spend the time to mix it....This post has kinda motivated me to post more though, and like I promised, I will actually try and mix this one.....I just dont want what I enjoy best (the writing) to be overshadowed by my shortcomings as a home recordist....So this post actually helped the person I intended it for plus it helped me....I felt the need to put up or shut up coming up on my 1000th post....unfortunately, I put up a 1 hour project....THe good news is no matter how bad the next on is, I should be able to top this one.....And I know that no matter how bad it is, you guys will help me fix it....

It's a good song, Gidge. It would be worth recording it right (for example, vocals are too loud). Nice melody, chorus and concept; perhaps could use a little suprise somewhere....

Slim,

thanks for listening man....Yeah, Im kinda anxious to rework it up .....In hindsight, I probably should have taken at least another 15 minutes mixing, or at least a second take on the tracks I digitally masacred....oh well, that limiter plugin on the mix would have killed it anyway...

again thanks for listening and the kind words....

BTW, have fun Sat night....
