Is a compressor necessary??

I have been into the home recording thing for a little more than a year now and I have not had a chance to play around with a compressor. I hear lots of people talking about how you HAVE to use a compressor, but when I listen to my recordings I dont hear a need for it. What do you think? Is a compressor absolutely necessary?

yes/no. i find it helps a lot on snare and kick drums. vocals a little, depending on how you sing. it can help, but the smaller the budget, the less likely it is you want or need it.
