...is there no end to the stupidity?...just when you thought this guy made his most ridiculous statement, he outdoes himself...at least his spelling/grammer is improving...

Dragon banned him early this morning.

What is the "Tascam mod" and where can I find out more about it?

The one mod I've heard about is to replace the trim/gain pots in the board. As I understand it, the stock pots are linear taper, and others prefer log taper, so they don't get a bunch of gain all at the end of the pots travel. It doesn't affect the sound as much as the usability. I believe Tascam has incorporated that mod into the latest production runs, but I could easily be mistaken.

Tascam will sell you the replacement pots, if you need them.

QUOTE..........

Geeze Sen, you're taking that a little bit too literally aren't you? I think the key phrase is "released "as is"" rather than "get groups signed" ...........but then people are free to read whatever they want into things around here.

Oh, so there was a KEY PHRASE that I missed, was there :D :)
Man..as I said...whatever. It's just that when i read that it stood out and sounded a bit...i dunno...selfish maybe.But of course I can't read anyone's mind (maybe others can read Harvey's ;) ) that's why I commented...
So Harvey don't worry about what you might have meant, all the possibilities Have been covered already..
Cheers guys...
Peace

Yup, it was poorly worded.

First, ya gotta have a band with talent - one that might get some major label interest, or already be in the process of signing with a label. A lot of the bands we get in our studio want to record an album they can shop to a label, as opposed to some bands that only want to have some albums to sell to local fans. There is a difference.

When we are recording a band that either has label interest, or label potential, it's important that the equipment doesn't get in the way of production. For example, when we do a club demo in Studio B, we usually use the MXL 603s for overheads, or the Oktavas, or sometimes the Behringers, depending on the cymbal choices, the drummer, and the song.

In studio A, we use the backside of a pair of AEA R84 ribbon mics for overheads. In both studios, our goal is to get the best sound possible. That's our job. We work for the group. But major labels are very picky. MCI loved the album we did for South FM, but insisted that the vocals be redone for one song, and Chris Lord Alge had to do the remix. It wasn't our choice of mic they had a problem with; it was the emotional content of the vocal take.

For Slow Roosevelt's Sony album, we had three of the songs re-mixed in L.A., but all the original tracks were used "as is". Same thing for the Fed's new album, and Pimpadelic's last two albums. Most of the vocals on all these albums were done with the Neumann TLM103, the Shure SM7, or one of the MXL's.

In some cases, the albums were paid for by regional record companies, and the album was picked up by a major label and re-released. Others get signed on the strength of their demos, and sometimes, they go somewhere else to record their major album, like Flickerstick and FFTN. That's life.

My point was simply that the mics we used on these albums were good enough to get them major label interest, or if they do a major label album here, the labels don't have any problem with our choices of mics for the lead vocals. Our job is simple; basically stay out of the way, and help the band's talent to shine thru.

The V69, and V67 and the V77 have been solid workhorse mics for us. I also wouldn't hesitate to use a Studio Projects T3 on a major label album (if I had one), and there are several other Chinese mics that are more than "good enough" to hang with the "big boys". At least for us, they work, and work well. YMMV.

If my previous statement came across as "selfish" or "arrogant", I apologize for my poor choice of words; that wasn't my intent. In the end, it's the band and their music that counts - all we can do is try to help them achieve their goal. Sometimes, we feel like we've succeeded.

That hurts......

Is it possible to concentrate on content over form? Anyone familiar with HG's posts knows (As in based on past behavior, not "MIND READING") that Mr. Gerst seems to have better things to do than inflate his own ego or deflate anyone elses. I imagine he's busy, like with his life.

I read his post as to be I use mics that work, whatever the source. These are some that have worked and X Y and Z companies think so too.

Some apparently read this to be "With these magical microphones I can turn
a no talent band golden"..

How long will it be before one of the EE's or vendors or RE's that post on this
thread see a question and say "I know the answer to that and can contribute something of value but I don't have the time to couch the answer in politically correct language that could'nt possibly offend any tender egos"?

And since my pitiful 2 or 3 previous posts were, according to some, not proper protocool for BBs, this one will probably draw someones ire for form, not content. I refuse to pre or post apologize.

What I am trying to say is you'll miss these guys when they are gone.

I NEED their help. I can't live long enough to know it all. I don't care if they think they are better at their craft then me.

They are!

I got an e-mail from Dragon this morning saying he had banned him.

If this is true its the best thing to happen at HR.com in a long long time!

Phyl, what "in" do you have with Dragon that he sends you emails? He hasn't even sent me verification that he got paypal donations I've sent to hr.com! Thats been more than a year ago.

Along with countless others, I complained about DJL's behavior in this thread. Dragon responded with an e-mail saying he had banned him.

This is the only time I've ever gotten an e-mail from Dragon.

My intent wasn't to get DJL banned, but rather to get a moderator to step in and either condone or condemn his behavior.

:D cool

Thanks Dragon! Back to a great board! maybe we can get some people back now who DJL's crap ended up running off.

Hasn't DJL been banned before? Will he be back again?
He had a temporary "cooling off" ban last time, which was lifted after 10 days. I believe this time, it's permanent.

Watching that little b*tch and Alan Highass wack off 24/7 was one of the main reasons I keep coming back to this place.

Dammit I'm going to miss that punk! :D

...this thread should been renamed "Interesting DJL Controversy"...

I, for one, am extremely happy that this is the last thread ever he can ruin on this board. Here is a person who comes in and touts himself as having some kind of knowledge, but refusing to back anything he says up with a single shred of proof. And he proceeds to try and take over the entire mic forum as his. If any thread was in a direction he did not like he crapped on it and ruined it for everyone else. He is the main reason you have not seen me in the mic forum for a few years until very recently. Now that he is gone, perhaps others who actually have experience and prove it with their work will participate again.

Slobbermonster, you may want to consider going ahead and locking this thread so it dies off the front page. You can do that since you started it. I'm sorry it got ruined. It was very informative and will be helpful in the archives for those who search on the original topic.

Don't be too sure.
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet."

And vice versa.

Harvey's Post, Gain Pots, and a ban.

Linear v. Log Pots!!! Sooooo there's a bit of info I can use, I HATE my pots that are full of gain up at the end, it's very hard to adjust up there. PITA, and now I at least, can say I know what to call it....

On Harvey's post about the bands and the mics - I LOVE reading that real world stuff. It reminds me of, "Behind the Glass." I can't stop reading that book, I've read it 3 times and been carrying it around like a bible for about a year. I just took 70 pages of notes from it so I could leave it home and lighten up my bag, but it's great reading, it's like being there. Hey Harvey, more, please!

on the ban, well, he does kind of "make a mess," of a lot of mic threads and it's annoying....I don't keep track of him so I don't have any more opinion on it than that.
