I guess next we'll find out that the Behringer B-1 is actually built by Neumann in a secret German bunker next to Uli's house

kidvybes said:...what I find interesting is the choice of microphone Tele chose to "modify"...of all the Chinese tube mics available, the Apex 460/Nady 1150 is one of the cheapest (retail price) and also one of the least liked for it's sonic character...
PhilGood said:I've seen plenty of posts here and other boards where people actually DO like the Apex and Nady. Several Pro's had very nice things to say about the M16. I don't know where you heard its one of the least liked. The components and build of the Apex are NOT cheap. All the caps besides power caps are mylars. The resistors are good quality. I haven't looked at the transformer yet, but I'm sure that could be upgraded. No doubt the capsule is a shanghai.
kidvybes said:Actually, I posted a question as to the opinions of the 460:
https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=143587&highlight=apex+460
...as you can see, the opinions varied greatly...seems like most support from that mic comes from Canada where the mic is distributed (and therefore less expensive in Canadian dollars than the MXL/Studio Projects/ADK counterparts)...I was actually talked out of the mic by a salesman here in FL who sells the Apex line, and warned me of inconsistancy of product quality...seems the Apex product suffers from the some of the same problems as the Nady counterpart (it has been stated in another posting on Gearslutz.com that they are both supplied by the same manufacturer)...wrinkled diaphragms, lousy tubes, poor QC...seems to me, there are more proven options at similar/slightly higher pricepoints...namely the MXL V77, V69M, Studio Projects TB1, ADK GT2, and so on... just MHO

Every time I go into Long & McQuade and ask about microphones someone tries to sell me an Apex 460. Why settle for a custom foam padded aluminum flight case when I can buy the R-F-T and get a wooden box?
Anyway, I bought a couple of 210 ribbons instead. I'm not sure if they have all the same phase problems, but I'm not even sure what that phase graph is supposed to mean, or if mics typically vary from a test mic like that. Does anyone here know?

PhilGood said:Well, the tube it comes with IS crap and I don't like how they mislead you into thinking its something it isn't. I checked the diaphrams in both of mine and no wrinkles. I wish there was a way to see if the diaphram has good tuning.
I didn't pay full price for either of mine so that's probably where my bias comes from.
kidvybes said:Phil... I know from some of your other postings that you love to mod your mics...just curious what mods you may have made to your 460s including swapping out the tubes)...what is the total cost of those mods, and add in a custom paint job and a spiffy logo...don't forget the "rare wood case"...I'm not trying to be a wiseguy, I'm just trying to restate my original thought that none of that can justify the Tele version's cost...but, seriously, what mods have you made on the 960s?...I correspond with Flatpicker (Tim) and recently purchased one of his modded mics which I'm pleased with...and as I stated above, I have a Royer modded ADK that is KILLA!...so don't get me wrong...I appreciate the value of the Chinese products...
scrubs said:Why? In a market economy, people will pay what they believe the item to be worth. If someone buys the Telefunken for $1400 and is happy with the performance at that price, there is no problem. Telefunken obviously feels justified charging this amount for their better quality control in capsule selection, different capacitors, tubes etc., US assembly, their brand name and service guarantees. I'm not saying I would buy the mic, just that I don't see a moral problem with them charging whatever they want. The market will eventually determine whether or not this pricing is warranted.

how the hell can you be saying "buyer beware" when nobody has actually listened to them side by side????????????????????
EDITORIAL ADDITION: May 20, 2005
Since the bench test between an R-F-T M16 and Apex 460 was published earlier this week, Studio Reviews — an online publication started a little more than a month ago in April 2005 — has received over 50,000 hits in the last three days, and the M16/460 test page alone has had over 22,000 requests. Obviously, we've been contacted by Telefunken USA on the matter.
This evening we ended up having an eye opening interview with Telefunken North America's CEO Toni Fishman. This new information we received from Mr. Fishman regarding the founding and modern development of R-F-T "Funkwerk" Microphone & Electronics, a new division of Telefunken North America, was so compelling and exciting that I asked if we could publish an interview. We were given confidential information and images of products currently under development. Studio Reviews will soon be publishing an official statement from Toni Fishman as well as an in-depth interview about his company's developments.
