Intel or AMD?

I was looking at getting a computer to do recording. What is the best to go with, Intel or AMD? I heard that AMD was better for music.

I used to be an AMD man mainly because I didn't have a whole lot of money to drop on Pentium Processors. This was back in the AMD K6-II days... Now though, I won't go anything but Intel for the PC platform. I have run into strange glitches and things with my older AMDs. Now while I can't vouch for newer AMDs, I know my Intel has never let me down and this latest one has been the most solidly stable computer I have ever built. Most programs are compiled for the Intel CPU architecture, of which AMD has to imitate. I don't like the idea of imitations...

It's like asking Chevy or Ford...both will do fine the Intel will cost you more but they are the fastest for now(I'm just talking the common type cpu) I used to use Intel but now I use AMD no problems so far, your safest bet is to copy someones system that uses the same hardware/software your going to use. BTW Chevy is much better;)

Same as the Mac vs. PC quibbles.

It's irrellevant.
They are computers.
They all work.

Get one and get recording.

Good idea. I'll get my Commodore 64 with cassette drive!

This is a matter of personal religion, and therefore there is no answer.
Both work just fine.
BTW, most glitches people are complaining about are caused by other parts, rather then CPU itself: mobo (chipset, BIOS), power, cooling, drivers etc. etc.

webstop is right. Most glitches are caused by cheap hardware like SIS chipsets. I hear they had a new chipset out that was supposed to be good, but I don't know about that... Cheap hardware is very difficult to work with and very unpredictable. As long as you get good hardware in either genre, you'll be fine.

great flame bait :)

have seen thousands of flames since 99 over this question, maybe this forum is different? naw, what was i thinking :)

peace all... amd rules...heh

I'm using an AMD KT4 Athlon Mother board, 2200 and have had no problems.
It's a stand alone audio, midi setup,
My only gripe is it runs quite hot. I fixed this problem by taking off the metal cover and using a domestic household fan running straight into the harware. Doesn't look that good but my computer box is ouside of my studio! ( can't stand fan noise!)
I'm using Sonar and are running a huge amount of audio tracks and plugins at the same time!

Who me? Nope.
:) I was just throwing that out there for another option for a DAW. [sarcasm]I hear they're very good! :D[/sarcasm]

The only problem with AMD cpus is that the do run hot. Otherwise, they provide excellent performance. Just make sure the heatsink and fan get installed correctly. As well, you should purchase one that is quiet such as through www.quietpcusa.com

The problem with using an AMD cpu is the motherboard chipsets.

And, this is the reason I prefer Intel because I love the Intel motherboards. They aren't the sexiest mobos but the are so stable and so easy to update.

So do Intel cpus. And it's not that one is running considerably hotter than the other. They both run HOT.

My P4 even overclocked only hits about 110 to 120 degrees, much cooler than P3s that I have worked on. You still need a good fan, I'm running a Vantec. There are ways to overcome having to use a loud fan, like water cooling. Swiftech makes some good stuff: http://www.swiftnets.com/
