instrumental song needs vocals...and i can't sing so i'll need to find someone who can

This is just an instrumetal song i made and is my first contribution to this mixing clinic

i used a $40 uni directional dynamic mic and my 100 W marshall amp - i know i need to get a shure sm 57 to do the job right - but i am getting one today from my friend :) - was trying to get a clean guitar sound from my les paul...but its way to bright and harsh i feel ...maybe i'll move the mic back a bit when i get the Shure sm 57

recorded the drums, and organ on my keyboard(added a chorused leslie effect)...bass guitar went straight into my mixer (the pick ups seem to cause a lot of noise so i end up having to turn it way down resulting in a very muddy bass sound ....

and the lead guitar at the end was recorded with a little distortion and a delay effect was added using cakewalk sonar....but i think i massacred it a bit

i'm still new to recording so any advice or critcism would be very helpful

Okay, I'm typing when listening.

Clean rhtyhm gtr - sound is too "sharp", try different mic placement. Also you might consider compressing it a bit more. The guitar is too loud in the mix too. Overall it makes the whole song "annoying for ears".

Drums - lifeless and very thin but what else can you expect :)

Bass - I agree, it is a bit too "muddy" but overall not that bad. It could use some tightening thou. Your bass/kick-team isn't quite working yet. You need to get them to provide the foudnation for your song.

Lead gtr - Again too bright, especially for a such a slow/balladish song like this. Your sound kinda reminds me some old 50's really nasty overdrive. Without that "earpiercing" sharpness in it, it isn't that bad.

Effects - Yuo have quite alot reverb going there. I would try to decrease it a bit and maby add some dealys instead (especially lead gtr).

I Agree

Yeah i know the guitar is way to bright and ear piercing ....i'm gonna get the 57 and move it about 3 feet back from the amp ....maybe that will decrease that ear piercing effect....the bass is just annoying me now ...way too muddy

The drums i know are badly done...but i used my keyboard and messed around with the kick drum too much ...i'll record them too

i think the organ should be a lot more prominent when it enters ...i was actually trying to create a 60's kinda lead guitar sound...but like you said it does hurt the ears a bit...

Yeah and i have a tendancy to add way too much reverb...i'll get rid of that

Thanks for the feedback

ok I'm on it ...maybe even add some vocals later lol that should be interesting ... :D

Mix Number 2

Ok i think this is a bit better....

moved the mic away from the guitar lol....and now its bearable to listen to ...doesn't hurt the ears....

made the organ louder ...and bass quieter....and the solo doesn't have that silly 50's effect on it any more lol

any more suggestions?

not working there, chief.

(excuse the jackass chief remark)

hey man it is working now...sorry about that ....

you need to right click on it and save target as though

I tried both. When you go there, it says "page unavailable."

If you "save as", it will complete very quickly and not play.

I don't know.
