I am gonna do it, yessir.
I am scared. Gidge, you wouldnt happen to be coming to Cleveland this week, would yez?

I need to stay cheap, under $140.

1)I saw a maxtor 30gig 7200rpm for $100, will that work?

2) Are they all fairly compatible with my computer? HP 6645C, 566 celery, 256 ram.

3) How do I know if I have enough room in my computer? ( I recall Gidge saying what a pain it was to install one in his similiar HP)

4) At HPs website, the specs on my puter say I have one free drive Bay- external. What the heck does external mean?

5) Am I gonna regret doing this alone?

6) How much better will performance be, compared to the 15gig, 5400 rpm HD that came with the puter? I use SONAR: can I expect many more tracks and plug-ins?

I know I need one just for space alone, my HD is 53% full.
Cmon fellas, who wants to visit me in Cleveland and install my hard drive? I'll take you to the Rock Hall of fame...

I'm not gidge, but I am trying to catch up with gidge.

1) I've seen 40GB 7200RPM Maxtors for $20 less than that. With shipping maybe $90. Check pricewatch.com. Note: it is nicer to buy a drive locally because you can exchange it if it's dead out of the box. Other than that case, it doesn't matter because your warranty will be with Maxtor, regardless of where you get the drive. (Maxtor's warranty and exchange program is fantastic)

2) Don't worry about compatibility too much, but you might search deja.com with your HP model number and "maxtor" to see if there are any problems. *Sometimes* there are problems with specific drives on specific controllers. I have had trouble with IBM drives on highpoint controllers, and trouble with a maxtor on a promise controller (fixable). It happens occasionally.

3) Open the computer and look. You need one open 3.5" drive. It's best if it's in an open location. If you have to stack your hard drives on top of eachother, then I would recommend something like "The Ultimate Hard Drive cooler" which is a pretty cool device. For one thing, it'll move the drive to a 5.25" bay, plus it has a big heatsink and fan on it to keep the drive cool. Kinda neat. Maybe noisy though. If you don't have any open 3.5" bays and you don't want something as fancy as a HD cooler, you can always just pick up a little 3.5" to 5.25" kit for a couple bucks and mount the drive in an open 5.25" bay (the type your CDROM drive is in, for example). Hell, I can give you one for free if you can't find one.

4) This either means you have a 3.5" or 5.25" bay free, and it's in front of an "opening" on the case. For instance, your CDROM is in an "External 5.25" Bay". Now these bays can be "covered" with little inserts that come with the case. Look at the front of your case, you will either see a 5.25" or a 3.5" bay with a little insert in it (e.g. no CDROM drive or Floppy drive, just a piece of plastic). See #3 for more info.

5) If you're just adding a drive, it should be reasonably painless. Just be careful. Always make sure that some part of your bare skin is touching a metal portion of the case when working inside. UNPLUG the computer. Some people will tell you to leave it plugged in so that there's proper grounding, but you only need to worry about the difference in potential between you and the computer. Unplug it or risk electric shock or serious damage. If possible, connect the IDE cable to the drive and motherboard before seating the drive to make life easier. Pin 1 on the cable is marked with a red stripe, and will always go TOWARDS the power cable on the drive (this does not apply to floppies). Pin 1 on the motherboard will be marked....or you can just look at the stripes on the existing cable(s).

Try to put the audio drive on IDE2 Master. Where you then put the CDROM drive sort of depends on how you use your system. Typically, though, you'll put the CDROM as slave to the secondary (audio) HD. Disable Auto Insert Notification!

It's basically very simple, everything in that machine of yours just plugs together all nice & neat. There aren't many real tricks, and you don't have to be an electronics whiz. Just be careful. Adding a hard drive is probably one of the easiest internal upgrades you can do.

6) If you weren't maxing then you'll never know. Typically a 5400RPM drive that does 12MB/sec sustained transfer is technically capable of 41 24/96 tracks. A 7200RPM drive that does 25MB/sec sustained transfer is capable of 86 24/96 tracks. You'll probably never reach either limit with that system. You will notice a performance increase just in everyday audio tasks though. Peak files will be created faster, mixdown can be faster, destructive edits will happen faster. Don't expect to run any more effects. Overall just a better feel. It's nice to have Windows on a 7200RPM drive as well...but no biggie.

*DAMN, I had to take a phone call during this post...so I'm sure gidge beat me to it!*

Slackmaster 2000

Woohoo Slack, you beat Gidge!! ( He has not been feeling well lately, get well soon Gidge).

Thanx so much for the great info, I am looking forward to doing it. I have a "Staples" gift certificate left over from the Holidays, so If I pay a few bucks more, So be it.

I have one free 3.5 drive, I see the plastic 3.5 piece on the front of my puter. I am getting excited now, I got a shitload of recording to do.

I will print this thread. I also have another computer upstairs in my girlfriends office, so I can get online and ask questions when I plug in this puter and It doesnt work!!

Thanx bud, I will be sending you my 4CD Davemania Collection shortly ( Oh wait, that is a different Dave), DK

Slack, as always, has given excellant advice. How can I maintain my reputation as Computer God when he is always beating me to the punch? :p

I might add that if you can somehow scrape up a few more bucks, Best Buy has a deal this week for a Maxtor 80 gig 7200 RPM, $189 minus $10 mail in rebate. Or for less get a Western Digital 40 gig for $129, and then you get back by mail a $30 gift card good at Best Buy.

Oh crud, I might have been a little misleading there about the bays.

It is somewhat common for the hard drive to be mounted underneath the floppy drive, sometimes in an external bay. So if you've got what looks to be an "open" 3.5" external bay, you'll definately want to check it out and make sure your hard drive isn't in that spot. On the other hand, if you've got a 5.25" external bay free, there is 99.9% that it really is free. You might want to pop the case off in either case and take a look to make sure you know what you're going to need!

Good luck!

looks like Slack has you covered....yes the Maxtor is compatable...i have a 30gb Maxtor Diamon Max 7200 rpm in mine.....

yes it was a bitch....i practically had to take the whole think apart.....but it should fit.....lets just say i was almost in tears halfway through....i will do no further upgrades until i get a new case/mb/ps.......

if you are really scared to do this yourself let COMP USA or someone like that do it.....

Thanx guys,
I think I will go with a 40gig 7200 rpm Maxtor, for $99.94 at Staples, which is close and I have a gift certificate there. Why the 40gig is four cents cheaper than the 30gig, I have no clue.

I hope you fellas are around this weekend, I might need you. You guys should move to Cleveland. We could jam at my townhome, I could get you tickets to Barry Manilow, Donny Osmond, and every other has-been show that comes to town, I play them all.

I think my free hard drive bay is below the CD-rw and above the installed Hard drive. I will crack the case and look. This is where I normally do my " Hold Me" Spiel, but I am feeling manly, I think I can do it. I installed 2 soundcards and RAM, I think I can handle this. Wish me luck, Dave

Bummer Dave, I was just in Cleveland yesterday, swapping out a bad router at our office there.

I made a new personal best driveing time - Detroit to Cleveland in 2.5 hours.

DavidK, I just caught your joke, or at least I think it's a joke.

Thanx for gratuitous mention of my project in your thread. I get it, it's a joke, -right? Haha.

I'm waiting for DavidK's Killer Kompilation disc.

/DA

Yeah DavidK, it's a joke, and it's funny,

-so don't let anyone tell you, or even imply that you're not funny.

-That, and I haven't forgotten that you're a pro violinist, hired to play with orchestras and pop bands alike, and therefore you're obviously very talented, well beyond the average. I've caught lots of your posts, and I said long ago on another thread, on your behalf, that IMO your posts should be read and your opinions valued. I stick by that. Cheers, /DA

Thanx Reel, very cool. I think the Davemania promotion stuff is hilarious, I posted that because someone was complaining about spamming or something last month. I couldnt care less, but it was a funny thread. DK

Thanx, I think it's hilarious too. It's so over-the-top, it's incredible.

It's all for fun, and pretty hilarious too. Glad you liked it.

Where's the list of sessions, or discography of DavidK? Everyone except me has a promotional webpage, don't they? Where's yours?

-DavidK's Killer Kompilation is Koming! Right?

Thx, Good luck with your upgrade./DA

i purchased one of those maxtor 40 gig earlier this week. no problems. easy to install easy to partition (i broke mine into 4 parts). i can tell a difference. the programs do open and close faster. i also purchased more ram (now im at 512). cpu will be teh next upgrade.

have fun.

ps DAVEMANIA IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee, thanx a lot! BTW, did you get in on it?

I don't recall your screen name being on my list. You can email me off board to tell who you are, or to request your cds now, if you didn't get in on it before. People sometimes change screen names, and sometimes it's hard for me to keep them straight.

BTW, thanx for the compliment, I really appreciate it. /DA

David,

I recently did the same as you and installed a new maxstor hard disc. I too was afraid but I pulled myself up to my full height........ and got my friend in to help me!:D

Well, thats only partly true, I installed it okay, bit of a fiddle, Slacks Post was absolutely smack on the nail, (excellent post Slack) but I did it. In truth, the thinking about it was worse than the doing. The most important bit is make sure you connect up before mounting the drive in position as its almost impossible to do it afterwards.

But the critical thing is what you do with it after its installed. Is this a second drive or a replacement primary? What o/s system have you got/going to install? Do you know how to format it?

But don't panic, with members on this forum and the kind of post you get from the likes of slack and Gidge, you'll be fine.

Don't forget to update us all. Good luck!

I'm at work now. Pulling time and a half so I can indulge myself with a new 7200 myself. I've got a Staples, CompUSA, BestBuy and a clone shop all within 5 min. Whoever has a fan to cool this thing will get my biz (already checked the clone shop - no fans. I need a PC show). Thanks DavidK for starting this thread, causing me to spend more $$$. How am I ever going to afford Davemania?:D

What a great coincidence… I too will be installing a second hard drive in the very near future, and will be watching this thread with much interest. Previously I thought my puter had a 7200 rpm hard drive, but after much searching I discovered that the HD in my HP Pavilion is a 4400 rpm hard drive…. what a bummer:(

The press releases originally described my hard drive as a sub 7200 rpm HD. Right, and I have a sub 600 HP engine in my Volkswagen!

At any rate, I will be hoping to learn how to install a second HD here. I’m skeered too…

Good luck on your upgrade:)

If only PCI cards were this easy...

Installed a Maxtor 40 Gig 7200rpm yesterday from Staples. Thanks DavidK. It was behind the counter for $119. I told the guy that I had it on good authority that it was on their website for $99, and that if he didn't make good on it I'd let my 3 1/2 year-old loose in the store.

Slackmaster, I put it in a 5 1/4" drive bay so I could hook up a cooling fan that goes across the front of the case. $15 at CompUSA.

The Maxtor comes with software. I had to use it. Just follow the instructions. It worked right away. The only thing I had to do was set the jumper to "Master", making sure it was not on the same bus (ribbon cable) as my C drive.
This took me about 1/2 hour, including hardware setup. Everything works, and all my Sonar Audio data resides there now.

Conversely, I spent about 2 hours trying to get a stupid PCI to USB card going on my wife's machine. No love. Still trying.

P.S. DavidK, I'll take you up on your "come to Cleveland" offer if you're not set by the time the Red Sox come to town to play the tribe this season.:D
