Installed New Soundcard... HS 2002 Recording Playback, Metronome

Here's a quick question that I know I have seen the answer to before somewhere on this BBS, so sorry for asking it again:

I use HS 2002 and have just installed a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum card, which has already gone way beyond my high expectations. The problem is that when recording audio from my guitar, HS is recording all the playback as well, ie. the metronome, MIDI and Audio tracks previously laid down. The dB meter in the track view also shows any playback going through when a track is armed, so basically any recording I do re-records the entire song as I have laid it down so far... obviously a pretty big problem.

I know that there must be some stupid solution to prevent my line in/soundcard from recording playback/metronome, and would be interested to know what it is.

Also, how does one attach a soundfont to MIDI drums.

Thanks in advance,

jp

Yeah, there is an option usually called "What U hear" that is sometimes checked in you windows mixer.

Also, as far as changing your midi drums, are you using Live Synth Pro or your Audigy for Soundfonts, because there are different instructions for both.

There are fairly detailed instructions in the Help file with SONAR, I'm guessing it will be in hS 2002 as well.

Here is a brilliant post from Alan McGuiness on how to get great sounding midi drums using soundfonts. Search down the thread and you will see his post. I can personally vouch for his suggested drum kit soundfont too.

And sonny's post on the What U hear is right - it should be unchecked in favour of "line in 2/I2S" or microphone, mine works best with the former.

Good luck!

I've gone into the control panel > multimedia > audio.

The problem is that under recording menu, there is a dropdown with audigy record (the only option), and under the playback, audigy playback (the only option). I do not know where the checkbox menu is to select "what you hear", and I've been looking all over.

By the way, I run Windows 98.

Click on the little yellow speaker icon in the lower rigth corner of the Windows desktop....

Alchuck's right. You gotta go to your creative mixer.Once you are there chose line in as your recording source.

Randy, there are two mixers that Jumping pound has to take care of, the Creative drop down which he has found, and the M/soft mixer which AlChuck was referring to. The latter is found bottom right hand side of your tool bar, a little yellow speaker, right click. "Open Volume controls > options, check Recording and make sure your "What u hear" module is unchecked.

Thanks guys,

I actually figured out that the control box I was looking for was in the Audigy directory soon after that last post. HS is no longer recording playback.

Another quick question regarding soundfonts:

I have downloaded some of the soundfonts suggested by Paul in the above link from thesoundsite.net. The problem is that if I attempt to attach any of them that are above 10 megs (ie, the Douglas natural drums), I get an error message "not enough soundfont memory". Is there any way to allocate more memory to this task?

The Audigy uses the system memory to "store" soundfonts. You can change how much memory used for this in the AudiHQ -> SoundFonts -> Options

Personally, I never bother with the creative mixer, I load the soundfonts directly into Sonar. Much easier, almost seemless operation, then you can mess about with patches in real-time.
from within Sonar, as your track is playing. Options > soundfonts >Attach, locate and load your soundfont. Easy.

Actually Paul, I have been attaching soundfonts directly in HS, using the method you describe. I didn't know there was any other way. Har! I'll be trying out Moskus' solution tonight.

ps for Paul: I used to live in Rattlesden in East Anglia, pop. 200. They don't come much smaller than that.

By all means try out the Creative route but its nowhere near as easy to manage/make changes to your soundfont patches.

With a population of 200, Rattlesden wins it by a whisker in the "smallest village stakes" from where I live. We have the same number of residents in the village as in the Doomesday book entry for 1068AD! All we have is a 1000 year old Church and a Pub. But what a pub:D

Yeah, but you still have to set the amount of memory to use for soundfont in the AudigyHQ-software...;)

True, but once its done, its done. Until the next session......:(

It's very nice to have a topic that "keep in the topic" while others melting away from focus after 5-6 post... Keep it that way guys... :) :) :D
