Hey fellow recorders,

So I managed to put something online, and I really need some advice and expert knowledge.

Two friends of mine and me did a semi-structured jam session and recorded the bass guitar, electric guitar and drums with two mics since my interface hasn't got any more channels. I put one mic (Shure SM58) in front of the guitar amplifier and placed the other condensator mic (MXL990, a bit cheap I know) in the line of the bass amplifier and not to far from my drumkit.

This resulted in the following track:

First of all I am a drummer and I like songwriting and bits of composing. I know some stuff about recording and the technical side but I'm (sadly) not an expert.
I would really like your feedback to improve my recording/mixing/mastering skills. Feedback on the composition or drumpart is also welcome.

If someone wants more specific questions:
- Is it audible that the drums and bass are on the same track.
- How did I do mixingwise?
- Is the compression allright? (I did some research but I still do not totally understand what it does, I can hear it do, so I did most if it on ear)
- Any tips about microphone placement?
- Anyone any ideas how to record drum, bass and guitar simultaneously with only two channels? (I know that it's better to record in in parts, we're still a bit in the process of writing, but once we're sattisfied with one of our pieces we'll record the parts separatly)

Thanks already!

Sounds pretty good for a two mic recording. The bass is a bit heavy/loud in the track. But rather than that going down in the mix I would think the drums should come up. But if the drums and bass or on the same track you're kind of stuffed.

Good effort though. :thumbs up:

Thanks guys!
@ Dr.SpringReverb I didn't plan becoming an ambassador for recording with less mics. Mainly because it takes much time to find the good spot for the condensatormic to have a nice drum/bass mix...
@Mr Clean, I see what I can do, I might be able to get it less bassheavy while playing with the equaliser. Allthough it is not the way I should do it, I also shouldn't try to record a drumkit and bass with one microphone.
