i'm looking for something with the "57 sound" but a little fatter to use on snare drum--my suspicion is that the modded 57/545 would be good for this application, especially since it's gain-hungry.

cheers,
wade

it's quite possible that it could get you a fatter snare sound. i dunno if the mod actually helps to bring out the lows, or if the toned-down mids allow you to hear the lows a bit more clearly. either way, it's worth a shot. i actually did the mod on an old 57 that my uncle gave to me because the XLR pins on the bottom got out of alignment somehow with the slot, and he couldn't plug it in anymore :p so i fixed it and modded it.

i'll definitely be trying it out again this weekend, maybe i'll post some clips or something on snare and guitar cab.

awesome pictures, so now people know exactly what to watch out for.

That... or those manufacturing the fakes know what to fix... :D

that's crazy, i mean the japanese newspaper inside. ha! what the hell was the point of putting that in there any way?

I don't know the reason behind the newspaper. I might frame it. Its really fucking crazy. maybe it's an ad - extra promotion or something ha. Either that or they have a sense of humour :D

But.........How did these fakes sound? I realize just out of principle its still irritating to have purchaced a fraudulent knock off, but at only $50 each if they actually sound as close to a real 57 as they look, it may still not have been such a bad buy. I have no problem buying good knock offs for less, as long as I know they're knock offs!

Also, what is that 57 mod? (It might be fun to experiment on one of my GLS mics.

the sm57 mod just involves removing the transformer. if you want to try it out without committing to it, remove the capsule and wire it to a mic cable to check it out.

does the capsule screw off the body on the es57 like the sm57 does?

Well I can't speak for all of them but mine isn't useless, depending on the application though... If the source doesn't require a lot of gain then it's not too bad actually - however they are noisier than the real deal. Also I think (to my ear) it's a little brighter than the genuine.

It sounds good on my Marshall amp. Maybe not for you guys, I play trash music but it sounds good on clean. Weird.

I really like the fakes.

what is trash music? have you compared a fake to the real deal? which fake do you have?

Trash is, I don't really know how to define it but many on noises and dissonant stuff. Not trash metal or anything like that hah.

Yeah I compared the real SM57 to the fake ones and suprisingly I like the fake better, as it have that extra gain on the higher frequency or easier put, brighter.
