Suck 'em and see!
Just sprung to mind..... If I use the direct outs on the board can I tame the transients of each track (drums mainly) with compressors plugged into the inserts? Or do I need to go into the comp then into the desk?>

I'm using a soundtracs topaz project 8

You can, but if you're talking about recording off these direct outs, but it sounds like you'll be recording the compression as well, and that's something you can't remove later on.

Of course, I may have misinterpreted the question! ;)

Direct outs would be after the insert/EQ.

Direct outs typically come after the insert point, but vary widely amongst whether or not they are also post EQ and even post fader.
