what is the difference between routing effects by inserts and fx tracks. i was told at college to send desired track to fx track if its assigned for reverb. not sure how compressor etc work. would these be placed in the inserts?

if so why?

much appreciated

Simple, in case of an insert the effect is applied for 100% on the track.
In case of a send to an FX track, the purpose is to mix the effect with the original sound.

In the last case you have two faders which you can use to make the optimum mix for the effect.

Compressors are typical insert effects, but some people might use them as sends to an FX track, called parallel compression.
Reverb is nearly always in an FX track. Make sure however to put the mix on the reverb on 100%, because you want to mix the original track with 0% effect with the effect (FX) track with 100% effect.

Cheers
