Im recording my band, and i sound different through a mixer and monitors, than i do when we record vocals. I was wondering if it was the Input setting we have it on when we record it, or what.

Im using a Peavey Mic, not sure what model, but i use it live as well. Just when we record i dont sound like i want it, and we cant afford decent mastering software and all that good stuff yet.

The Fostex mixer we're using is the MR-16 Digital Multi-tracker

Do you mean you sound different in the headphones when you're recording?

Otherwise, I'm not sure how you're listening to your vocal takes, if it isn't through a mixer and monitors.

If you're using a stage dynamic to record vocals, you'll probably be really happy with a new mic when you can't afford it. Screamo likes the SM-7 or RE-20.

It also could be that nobody understands what you want because you could possibly have been a little less vague in your OP.

Or do you mean that when you listen to the playback after you've recorded it sound's different?

If that's the case, it's because you're not singing at the same time. Your voice echoes around in your head, so it sounds different to you than to everyone else. When you listen to the recordings, you're hearing what everyone else has heard all along.

I sound different through a PA system then i do on the recording. I have a specific sound i want my screams and growls to sound like (sort of to have a muddy feel or a powerfull punch) but in the recording it just sounds like its plain. I cant fix it with reverb.

What im asking is if there is an input setting i should put it on for it to have like a powerfull punch when i scream.

So what's the question????

"I was wondering if it was the Input setting we have it on when we record it, or what."

If you cant get it from that.. basically im wondering if there is a specific input setting that people use for screamo/death growl

Just in general, the recording is an accurate representation of what you send it. You might assume the tone, effect, distortions you're missing (same mic, same mic technique?) come from the pa (mixer's electrical output, plus the speakers?) and or the room. Therefore, record that. Or those.

+1 If you like the sound of your voice coming from the P.A.

You can stick a mic in front of the speaker and record that sound.

Technically, that's not a question. But, I'd go with "or what".:p

That would make sense....
(i feel like a retard)
Guess we'll try recording from the PA system speakers.

Not to say you can't get there other ways, but at min it's a peak at the mechanisms at work as to why it does what it does. PA head may be 'crunching, speakers, and rooms are very high color’ things.

(i feel like a retard)...

And you know what? Don't. Other than maybe getting the question better (cutting to the chase in one day vs three.. ;) ..this ain't stuff we're born with like chasing rabbits’ or something.

It's simple:

Shitty mic + exaggerator distortion unit + compression set on insane (to control dynamics) + some EQ to shape out the track = the perfect EMO, Screamo or anything MO on vocals.:D

Rob Zombie does that.....and cranks the PA to 10.

Your PA might suck, and is distorting a little bit, then when you don't use it, it sounds cleaner. Mic the PA and move the mic around til it sounds good..or put it by where you usually stand since you like that sound.. Or, you could record yourself singing the same exact line and distort that track. Bring up in the mix on your growling parts, then bring it back down.
