Yeah, I know - I put one up here just last weekend. But here's my excuse, for what's it's worth - I might have to move soon, which means no more studio for a while, so I want to work out this stuff while I have a chance. Begging your indulgence, kind sirs.

Anyway, if that's convincing enough, the tune's at Nowhere. You gotta no nowhere.

This is really cool! Are you a Residents fan?

Nothing really bothered me about this mix except maybe the thing that sounded chicken shaker like (what was that?) It could maybe be softened a little.

Sounded like there was lots of room for some cool vocal stuff. Some "straightforward yet weird" background vocals would be nice - but certainly not necessary. I did like the stuff you did with vocals just before the 2 minute mark.

Aaaaaah that egg is driving me nuts!!!

Vocals sound pretty compressed-it seems to have a shrinking effect on the voice here-which I don't think works with the spirit of the tune.

Nice sparse instrumentation-good clean sounds-I like the drum pattern-even though theres not much to it-it works.

Cool mouth trombone solo.

I agree with fprod-some backup vox would be cool-especially during the chorus's-it would really open the song up.

Cool song-you're stuff is very original/recognizable even when you're just doing a blues riff.

turn down that damn egg.

the drum patterns sound unmusically sparce and artificial. I think you'd get away with such random playing if on a real kit. Too many mouth horns played at once too.

I like the bass sound the best. sounds like an electric, actually mic'd up and picked near the bridge.

vocals are lower on this one as compared to your others.

i agree that the shaker might be a little too upfront..........the vocals sit fine i think.........i like the bass and guitar interaction........i might tend to agree w/ mix on the drum statement, but then again...many things would sound better here if we all had real drums:D Nice song...

I agree with what powder is saying about real vs machines in drum kits.. my point was it sounded like someone was just hitting buttons on the machine for its programming. ..and if that pattern was played on a real kit would probably "get away" with being considered on the quirky and unique side of playing. But on the drum machine, it sounded like someone unfamiliar with drum programming was pushing/hitting the buttons. (no offense intended, Dobro).. I "think" I understand what you MAYBE wanted with a rhythm track and the typical "boom-chick" wasn't going to cut it with this track. ..but something a little bit more "interesting"

fprod - never heard more than one tune by the Residents, but me and a friend laughed till we cried at a description of them in the All Music Guide.

Stratomaster - "turn down that damn egg"

ROFL - okay, okay (turning down egg now...) - I don't even hear it anymore. LOL This place is worth its weight in CDs. I tried some backup vocals with the main vocal, and it was fun trying to find something that fit, so I think you're right about there being an opportunity there. It would work with the dynamics of the whole album too, so I'll look into it.

mix - thanks for the listen. I'm gonna keep your highlight on the kick in mind - I know what you're saying, and I know what I was trying to do, but it's the sort of thing that might reveal something useful if I focus on it. First, I'll try to make it more sparse. Then, I'll make it busier. Then...

powderfinger - I don't suppose you do drums, huh? LOL

Haha, I can see you contemplating about that whilst smoking a pipe 'mmmmmmm, too many mouth horns....yes.....too many mouth horns....'

Not attacking your way of reviewing music, Mix. I only find your somewhat serious attitude funny to read sometimes. ;)

Back to Dobro's music...

Yippie! :D

I'm falling in love with your mind and its weird logic. Yep, I heard some intonation issues...do I mind? Nope.

Yep, I'm an asskisser....and I'm proud of it. I love what I love. Can't help it.

I even like the egg. :)

How true. Hey Jimbo, you're back! Good to see you man!

edit:

wrong song doh! I had this thread open while I was listening to something else

A little off my beaten path.

Pretty cool cheeky little jazz tune, but the walking guitar track through the verse kills it for me.

I liked the sparse drum patterns a lot, they worked great with the bass. Seemed to me the vocals could be moved a bit more front and center.

Okay, I'm gonna go out there and say I actually like the drums on this. Mainly *because* they sound like something no actual drummer would actually play. I always like people who approach their instruments kind of the way a child does - as if they've never heard anyone play it before, and so have no influences.

Now that egg, on the other hand...:)

Cool song, dobro.

Chris

Pedullist - I've *always* got intonation issues LOL - part of my sound. Autotune's for perfectionists. :D

Doug - thanks for the listen and feedback.

Chris - yeah, there are two ways (at least) to deal with software beats - try and make them sound like the real thing (that's legitimate) or just try to come up with something interesting (that's also legitimate).

Okay, I turned down the egg and added a second vocal to the refrain:

Better, worse, or just different?

I think you 2nd case of legitimacy should have everyone raise their glass in salute. I wish more people would have that frame of mind...especially with all this "modeler this...modeler that" stuff out there.

I think the fact that many things sound like many OTHER things leads people to believe that is the reason for their creation and existance.

I remember the Arp2600 era when people were trying to get their synths to say human words... like "banana"... "hello"... all that wacky stuff. Not sure why I included that thought...just that it was funny at the time, and no one even considered it to be a replacement for a phone answering machine, etc..

One thing I can always say about your tunes: very original stuff.;)

Obviously at this point I've listened to the remix, but I still think the shaker is a bit hot. Maybe more EQ wise than level.

I really dig the bass line.:)

The vocal is good, but a bit heavy on the compression. Perhaps just play with the attack & release a bit to make it less obvious.

MBrane - thanks for your impressions - yeah, Stratomaster noticed the overcompressed vocal as well, but there isn't anything I can do with it, since I tracked it that way. And I've tried retracking the vocal part, but I can't get a take I like better than the one you hear here. So, much as I try to get the best sound possible on my stuff, I gotta opt for the track with the better performance if it comes down to the crunch. And I know, I know - you're probably saying 'what's so special about this performance LOL'. Well, yeah, but you haven't heard the *other* takes. LOL

I'll investigate the EQ on the egg - thanks for that idea. :)

Yeah the vocal is overcompressed, but I just thought that's what you were going for. The song is "quirky" so really, there's no rules. I'd say anything goes here. I even liked the drums for the most part!

excellent bass tones.. nice sounding drums.. the vocals sound like they're at a good level too.. It's hard for me not to smile when I hear your music.. Your songs are the type of tunes that make me want to dance around in my underwear in front of my girlfriend while lip syncing.. :D

damn.. I never used that description for a song before.. good stuff!

LOL

I can only hope your girlfriend feels the same way about this type of music. :)

I lke this mix a lot better. Maybe it was the egg, but I'm not hearing it as dominated by the guitar part. I still wonder if twice in a row near the end is too many times to repeat the same lick, but it's sounding good. The backing vocals really bring the chorus out nicely.
