Since starting a band, I'm in the market for some drum cases to transport my drums around. I need a set of 5 cases; I have an 18x22 kick, 8x10 small tom, 9x12 medium tom, 11x14 floor tom, and a 5 1/2x14 snare. I looked at musiciansfriend.com for cases but their selection isn't too flattering and either are their prices...I don't want to spend $250+ for drum cases. Can anyone recommend decent cases that will protect my drums, are sturdy, and fairly priced?

Thanks a lot!

inexpensive and quality, 98% of the time do not go together when it comes to talking about equiptment. I think i bought drum cases(not plastic ones) on ebay about a year ago for $100, they are padded and give enough protection from scratches and stuff. I dont need plastic cases, cause i'm the only one that handles my drums, so i dont have to worry about stuff being thrown around.

So your padded ones provide enough protection for your drums? Just how much padding is there?

Don't get bags, you want cases.
I had bags for a while on an older kit that I had, but they just didn't last, and I wound up buying cases for the set anyway - after I went through 2 sets of bags/soft cases.

You don't even need the foam lined ones if you get fibre cases - you can get carpet foam and cut it to fit the cases, but I just used the fibre ones and it was fine.

If you intend to move your drums, it is worth it to have hard fibre or plastic cases. $250 sounds like a lot of money, but how much did your kit cost? I've got thousands of dollars in my kit, and I wouldn't let it leave my house without cases of some type. I had some foam lined wooden roadcase types of boxes that were made from 1/2" plywood & 1x2" bracing , but they were just way too heavy and were a pain to store, so I'm going with a set of either Protechtor or Humes & Berg cases for my kit. It's going to run me around $500 for the cases, but it will be worth it.

Cases can be a very important part of your gear. If you plan to trasport your drums yourself in your vehicle you has some control over how they are handled - but if there is any chance that the drums will be in a van/truck or that other people will be hauling them, then you need good cases.

The thin fiber cases (nothing more than cardboard really) are not the best option but are better than nothing. A set of 5 standard cases (snare, kick & 3 toms) can be found for less than $150.

When I used the thin fiber cases I wrapped the drums in blankets and then placed them in the case. Many drummers cut and glue foam to the inside of the case (They just seemed liked too much work to me - in particular since the foam almost always ends up getting torn up)

However, the hard plastic Endouro cases are the best overall cases I've seen and while they cost more they provide the best protection.

like Tim Brown, I haul drums that are worth abot $2500 and cymbals that are worth another $1200 - to me, $500 for cases is just part of the cost of being a drummer.

padded bags work perfectly well for me. if you don't puncture them they will last a long time. i've had mine for close to 15 years. i tore the bass drum bag because i forgot to remove a pointy bass drum anchor. if it hadn't been for my carelessness the bag would still be perfect.

if someone aside from yourself handles your gear you should get hard cases, though.

I'll pretty much be handling my own set; we're not at the point and may never get to the point where other people set up our gear for us (but hopefully we will!). I'm interested in hard cases after hearing all of your experiences. Thanks again for the replies!

It's definitely worth the extra money. Think about it - How many guitarists do you know who use Gigbags for their guitars?

Hey, if you love your "babies", you should want to give them adequate protection. Don't go buy some over-priced flashy-smashy cases, you could probably spend 200-300 bucks and be fine. It all depends on how much your drums are worth.

Protec

exactly what you're looking for!

i have them and they are amazing for what i paid for them
